Show UTe Rodeo Rider wins wins scholarship Diane Cleveland Did you know that t there are rodeo odeo scholarships for college students Sam McCrone is attending on just such a scholarship Sam who is studying Real Estate admitted that his first love is rodeo riding Sam discovered bareback and bull riding while a student at Tooele high and found that he had a natural talent for riding and not being thrown off and trampled in the process While still in high school Sam managed to take part in many rodeos rodeos' in the western states coming away with only a few bruises and scratches Then in March of 1977 while riding a bull by the very appropriate name of Graveyard Sam was bucked off and suffered a broken knee and rib This happened after an admirable seven second ride Sams Sam's doctor said it was it-was was best t to give up being a rodeo cowboy But Sam wouldn't let a thing like that stop him He set up his own personalized exercise program and got himself into shape and ready to ride again This time Sams Sam's dream was to become a professional As Sam explained a rider has to make 1000 in three years to become a member of Professional Rodeo Cowboys Cowboy's Association tion Sam had accomplished this already so now he hopes to go onwards and upwards in his quest for a chance tobe to tobe tobe be number one This last year he went all out to make the circuit finals First he sought to be one of the top 10 money winners in competition competition competition com com- petition in the Wilderness Circuit which includes Utah Idaho and Nevada In one weekend alone he chalked up 1100 Nine hundred dollars in Vernal and in Malad Idaho In the circuit finals held in Twin Falls Idaho riders fr from m the three states in the circuit compete in sudden udden death eath ments All the cowboys start the competition with zero points Whatever money they may have won prior to the finals has no bearing on the final championship Now each of ot the ten top cowboys has to go three rounds on three different head of stock provided by a stock contractor The riders are judged on ona ona ona a point system so many points for the cowboy and so many forthe for forthe forthe the horse Everyone has an equal chance in the beginning When Sam entered the finals he was in ins in's sixth th place and nd after the judges had m made d their decision Sam w was s number 4 winning another to put put his his earnings for last year at a whopping 2100 While at Sam will be competing on the intercollegiate circuit This year the top two cowboys will go to Louisiana forthe for forthe forthe the finals Samy may be one of those two headed for the championship in Collegiate rodeo riding I S.
