J After nearly thirty years of service with Utah Technical College ge at v Salt Lake lake 28 28 of them as president president it is with rel reluctance that I submit to to the State Board for Vocational Education my resignation as president 1 effective ve August 31 1978 l My Hy tenure with this great school from its Us inception as Salt Lake 4 r.- r. V VArea Area Vocational School SchooT then to Salt Lake Trade Technical Institute before technical has been one o e of becoming a full-fledged full year two-year college personal professional and institutional growth Total day and evening enrollment in the 49 1948 school year was less than 1500 students Fall vi Quarter 1977 headcount was in excess of Utah Technical College Is Isnow isi i F now numerically the fourth largest public post high school institution in the State of Utah and one of the most prestigious technical colleges in inthe the United States P. P Because of my concern for the future of this dynamic Institution 1 o with its Us dedicated faculty and staff and for the great numbers of students students' who ho wi will l acquire practical training in the years ahead I I feel compelled e. e to comment that this Board and all segments of Utah society need to 0 cT continue providing strong financial and public support for vocational education in Utah It is my rw personal philosophy that Utah Technical College at Salt Lake technical college Classrooms and should be perpetuated as a year two-year laboratories have all been designed for skilled and technical training H In spite of our good Intentions and strong desires we are not meeting the need for trained craftsmen in the State of Utah The Governor has stated that Utah will be importing 50 percent of its skilled labor force by 1985 b Until we are able to meet the objectives for which the school was was i ti c i r S- S established it Is my view t that at all acad academic mic concepts of the traditional community college should not be incorporated As you are aware this is the position I have held during the three decades of my leadership at this s. s institution Y Although our campus has become a monument to education I 1 also feel o obligated to point out to the Board that the great demand for vocational p r i training places increasing pressure on the College to expand its facilities f In the immediate future a Business Building is an absolute necessity There r f is a pressing need for additional facilities for Heavy Duty Mechanic I training Likewise there is need for a Physical Education Building which which 1 will enable the thousands of vocational students to have the same opportunities t to train and exercise their bodies afforded students in the i secondary schools and other secondary post-secondary institutions Again I express my thanks to the members of the current Board and their predecessors for their personal friendship to me as well as as' proffering proffering prof- prof It is with ambivalence that that-I jRr fering support in my capacity as president 4 leave l ave the College but it is with great pride for the objectives that have r been achieved t- t i i f x I You may be assured of my continued support to the College and vocational voca voca- f I.
