Show 13 P PO 5 UlO Uy T Type y e by ey Rich Burnham Burn ham Does Utah Technical College need an intercollegiate basketball basketball basketball basket basket- ball team Does this school need a team to get in back of and support In my opinion and other students the answer is yes But then comes the red tape that seems to always get in the way of things things' worthwhile Red tape such as money no facilities to support a team and no student support These are many of the problems presented to me by the administration However I think I have solved these problems One of the main problems seems to be financial This being that the Board of Regents feel we have no place for a team That also includes Provo Yet Provo still has a team but they also pay for it from their own pocket So why cant can't we also pay for our team temporarily For once I could see a good reason to charge us an activity fee and issuance of an activity card No offense to SLAP I think they have done a great job but when was it the last time you used your card Then comes the problem of no facilities for the team Provo had no problem in that case They use BYUs old ium Why cant can't we rent or have donated to us a basketball court Then with a team formed it would probably probably probably ably speed up building of a PE building instead of waiting ten years for it Also with a team formed it opens the door for other varsity sports With these questions answered they said they wo would ld have no student support Did you know we did have a team about four years ago thus backing up what they said For you see nobody went to observe the games The reason they give was because we couldn't win So I went and asked some alumni about this Many did not know we had a team and the others said that did not know where and when they had played I feel the reason of participation non-participation was not their record but because of lousy PR Even so if the reason was a losing record we must remember Utah also had a bad team for years but now their seats are sold out in season tickets We have to start somewhere So we must look to the future not the past I can foresee the possibility of increased enrollment and larger student participation participation participation pation for there is more support for a school with something to represent them I can see in the future of the team having alumnus coming to watch them along with other fans thus making money in tickets and concession sales I even see the Board of Regents changing their position because of the voices of protest stating unfair treatment to junior colleges Hoping to start the wagon rolling I have with other volunteers volunteers volunteers volun volun- started a petition of students Along with this petition we will seek support from the Executive board SLAP the student Senate school clubs the faculty and personnel l administration administration administration ad ad- ministration Utah High School Coaches Association coaches from statewide year four-year colleges NAACP taxpayers in general general general gen gen- eral and other miscellaneous organizations and people Along with this we have the full support of the Points West staff and John Weimer the director of If we stand up now and make our voices heard they have to listen We need your voice and your support |
