Show r Crazy Looking Students 7 t by Points West Columnist Jaren Green Deseret News cartoonist Holyoak always draws his characters with big noses and strange clothes On November 14 he drew students in a cartoon carton about the school name change Instantly I knew that the artist was making fun un of us He dr drew w a student to look like an old a cam camIn In fact all aU the students in his cartoon looked weird Its It's too bad that being different or weird has a negative connotation Our difference doesn't make us sub-human sub in a general sense our difference makes us unique a uniqueness we can be proud of Lets Let's examine the six students in Holyoak's cartoon The Old Man With A Cane represents our age Average age is 29 2938 38 percent of our students are 30 or older and 13 percent are over 39 The ability to learn doesn't die until we do but most peoples people's desire to learn dies early At f f those who keep the desire alive should be considered heros A Middle-Aged Middle Woman With Wife House-Wife Hair On campus 40 percent of the students students are women and 40 percent of those are single moms Financial needs have increased the number of women at our school Whether a woman goes to school for her man because of her man or in absence of her man is not the point she does it because she desires a better life Her desire is the means to her success A Tall Young Student This student may represent the students who plan to transfer to a university There are three good reasons to start at a year two-year college and transfer later 1 Its It's cheaper 2 The atmosphere makes it easier to get good grades 3 The G GE E requirements are more basic Students who take advantage of these three things are smarter than those who start at year four-year schools Y 1 The Man With A Bear And A Past reminds me of some of the veterans who tell war stories in class has slightly over veterans but they are not the only ones with interesting pasts There are 25 foreign students and an impressive number of handicapped students who have made their home In Holyoak's cartoon all the students with or without interesting pasts worked together Lets Let's hope that is a true representation of students it A Man With A Hat This is a family man Many many of us are married or have children but we still make time for school Some come to school after losing a job Between displaced workers attend Many students are area areso a so busy they forget to have fun Student body officers are concerned about student involvement Vice President Gary Wilkey says that most activities draw less than 2 percent of the entire not very impressive If you fc have been heen waiting for a good time to get involved now is the time A Big Guy With Suspenders This guy though he looks like a few instructors P in the business and technology buildings may represent students in the trades 3 and vocations Students like this take advantage of the hire education or basic education offered at More than 50 percent of all students take less jj than nine credit hours and some never graduate Industry and businesses hire s them and their goal for their education is completed f I Holyoak depicted us correctly but he may not have known like many that be little older older- a little more we are proud of whom we are We may a preoccupied with our scholastic non-scholastic worlds or a little more interested in M 1 basic education but we are no less different than students at other schools Most of all we dont don't have big noses |
