Show i Challenge Cup Bicycle Race Held At i k L By Ed Lile Managing Editor J Utah Technical College of Salt Lake may have started a program that will bring in outside activities and put the colle college e more into the public highlight On Saturday June 28 a CHALLENGE CUP BICYCLE RACE was held heldon on campus with the race course around the perimeter Jointly sponsored by the Development Office of Pete Maughan and the Public Relations Office of Jay Williams the race brought in 72 racers in the citizen class and 98 in the licensed semi-professional semi class Other participants in the race included the announcer David Rahn from Radio in Boulder Colorado and the COORS the CLASSIC biggest bicycle race in the United States Every 15 to 20 minutes throughout the day Rahn would give to for sponsoring the race About 30 volunteers from the Student Council Food Service and some of the clubs lubs helped with registration corner guards and the sales of Challenge Cup T shirts and posters as well as cold soft drinks and refreshments Williams stated that the news media coverage was excellent with support from the Deseret News Channel 5 News News U of Us U's Chronicle Tooele Transcript Bulletin and Points West This coverage as well as the attendance was incredible even with all the area activities that were creating competition Williams stated Also in attendance was the Utah State representative of the United d States Cycling the Federation-the organization that sanctioned the Challenge Cup Race The Mayor of Tooele and his wife spent much of the afternoon enjoying the event Many of the licensed racers stated how pleased they were with the race racecourse racecourse racecourse course saying it was the best in the state Russ Eastman's crew swept and vacuumed the entire course two days before the race and again washed down the corners Saturday morning All corners were lined and marked with 51 bales of hay furnished by Brock Farms of Granger Utah Barricades provided the pylons Rent-It Rent Inc furnished a large cherry picker for use by the media Two lift trucks used to stretch the starting line banner across the raceway were furnished by Arnold Machinery Co An estimated spectators watched the events throughout the day Williams said there were a few problems that would have deterred more degree weather and outside no water fountains We have already begun thinking about next year Williams commented This event should be held at least a month before the ending of Spring Quarter possibly as a climax to PRIDE WEEK He feels it should involve the Activities Board CAB as well as many of the campus clubs and organizations This is a major public event Williams concluded Q A V rr r 1 r f 0 rt r Y Yom 1 iG I ITAI T A A.
