C Tanner philanthropist and benefactor of our fountain was the featured guest Pomp and ceremony befitting the occasion was added upon by the presence of Utah's Commissioner of Higher Education Rolfe Kerr Representing the faculty and staff were President 0 O. D D. D Carnahan and Carnahan's Carnahan assistant and coordinator of the event Brent Goodfellow Representing the students was Associated Student President Gary Carpenter Opening comments by President Carnahan included a welcome to Dr and Mrs Tanner as well as to the guests in the audience Gary Carpenter was the first speaker He referred to the enjoyment the fountain has provided the students The recent appearance of a Blue Grass band provided ent entertainment for students who had gathered on the fountain area steps Carpenter spoke e of th the added beauty the fountain fountain has given the campus He spoke of a particular instance Recently a blind student told me that he was able to find his way much better by listening for the sound of the fountains fountain's splashing water This is a great day for Utah Technical College of Salt Lake began President Carnahan A 1 great deal l of work and effort has gone gon into formulating the plans S and d construction of the fountain he heco Carnahan spoke of the great contribution con con con- of his assistant Brent Goodfellow who has spent over over a aye year rear r anda a and d' d a half with this project Carnahan n Indicated indicated that it was determined that the fountain would blend well with the architecture and role of the campus Carn Carnahan han noted It used to be that vocational vocational schools were designed for spec specific ic goals but has changed in m recent years due to broadened public interests and offers more classes each year Carnahan continued In Utah the name OC Tanner is synonymous not only w with fountains but many other aspects of art as well I am constantly receiving compliments about our fountain A fountain is a thing of singular beauty a blend of Modern modern technology of glass and steel coupled with the ageless forces of L water He expressed appreciation to the architect Boyd Blackner as well as the committees that served with Goodfellow After Carnahan's speech those gathered were treated to two selections of classical music provided by The Bonneville Quartet Commissioner of Higher Education Rolfe Kerr addressed the aud audience n next t. t He said The Tanners are representative of a phrase by John D.
