Show Political Poll Given to Candidates by Daniel Weir Journalism A political poll given to student body body I candidates candidates candidates candi candi- dates revealed candidates feelings to toward ard the present system of campaigning which includes parties and singles There are two parties The Professional party has four members and the Tomorrows Tomorrow's party has a full seven members Also there are eight others who are running solo Nineteen candidates were polled The first question was Are you running on a ticket Eleven answered yes and eight answered no The second question read Did you feel pressure pres pres- sure sure to to run on a ticket Two answered yes 17 answered no i iThe iThe j The third question was Do you feel there is isan isan isan an unfair advantage in this election because of parties Three yes 16 responded no ho Although a great majority said no to this question many of the candidates said that there is a definite advantage to being on a party The candidates at the time of the poll were unaware of the fact that party names willbe will willbe willbe be included in parenthesis next to the party candidate names on the ballots The fourth and final question was H Do you feel that solo all-solo election election election elec elec- a mandatory party all-party or tion would be more fair Five said yes it would be more fair and 12 said that it would not Two did not express a strong preference Of the 12 who said no most expressed most expressed the feeling that ours is a society of choices and that the freedom to choose should not be taken away from the candidates On the other hand from the five who responded yes their feeling was that everybody everybody everybody eve eve- should be on an equal level in the election The party candidates felt that being on a ticket worked to their advantage because they could share the cost of running with others Also they felt that they would get votes not only from their friends but also from their colleagues colleague's friends as well One other advantage advantage advantage tage expressed was that persons on a ticket are already friends so that when they are elected they will work well together Solo candidates saw things differently They felt that the probability of f an entire party making making making mak mak- ing office together is remote and that divisions among officers would result Also they felt that if some unfavorable things surfaced about one candidate on a party the credibility of every every member of the party would be damaged As one candidate put it when it comes down downto to the voting you have to go it alone This was the feeling of almost all of the candidate tic o I |
