ble state of the women and minorities in this country Decision making doesn't include the working class the poor or the minorities something that will cause drastic and necessary change by the end of this century according to Harrington He stated that revel ant social movement in this country will be needed to prepare the people for the century America Socialism in this country stated Harrington doesn't mean the violent throw over-throw of the US U.S. and the system that now exits It means giving the freedom of choice decision making and all rights that we as Americans are guaranteed under the thet t constitution The DSA feels these areas are unavailable to most working J i A Americans t i He pointed to efforts that in the past were called socialism and had failed because the people had no vote in the decision The TV TVA A Tennessee Valley Authority a part of the New Deal Harrington said has done d ne damage damage damage dam dam- age since not only was the ecology in Appalachia destroyed but it was done without the so say-so by the people Harrington stated that in the world corporate structure the power is isnow isnow isnow now one in favor of the upper classes the rich and is too bogged down with bureaucracy to be representative of the working classes that built the system This makes the corporate system unresponsive to the peo peo- As an example of how socialism works Harrington pointed to the Swedish system as a positive example It can be effective without being a Communist plot to take over the world he said The wage-earner wage fund is money that goes not into the government as taxes or to the corporation but b back ck to the workers in additional benefits The workers organize to decide how and where the extra money does go not the management or govern govern- ment Economically the DSA feels the economy has ben sold to the rich and the recovery is artificial The problem in the industrialized world is that nationalization nationalization nationalization na na- of industry into national inter-national influences has severely hindered any voice in decisions by the workers This causes an international international international division of labor condemning theUS the I US U.S. to poor standing in the world competitive markets The US U.S. the the only advanced country to feel the hurt by the corporations' corporations disastrous policies He noted that Japan is getting competition in steel from Korea and Great Great- Britain is also having serious economical problems This unfairly forces our workers into sided one-sided take time Harrington feels that we in in America will ill see see a growth in in socialism by the end of this w wI I- I l V lack of policy-making policy to include all people in the US U.S. and the of the vote of organized workers will help foster the desire of the people toward this change Harrington echoed the attitude of many economists and most socialists that the Reagan recovery is going to to be expensive The large increase in defense defense defense de de- spending something that economists agree upon as expensive is wasteful wasteful wasteful was was- and the DSA doesn't do advocate the destruction of the world to see who really has the best Harrington remembers the downing of the Korean airliner as a good e ex- ex a the ho f how nef ct ye preventative avoiding in systems av s ter He stated that the Soviet Union had two hours and still claims that w they couldn't tell the difference between a civilian jetliner and the 1 large Air Force jet before they shot the craft down Harrington Harring Harring- ton stated that Pershing and Cruise missiles being deployed in Western Europe and the responsive display ad up build-up in the East by the Soviets is proof enough that if they cant can't distinguish the difference in two hours how will nine minutes be enough He reminded the audience of the result of the final score of a nuclear battle Harrington interviewed many off laid-off steel workers who had once made concessions to the corporations only to become unemployed by management management management manage manage- ment told him assured that the and de de- decreased anyway They they were e- e s creased labor union ties would benefit them They were lied to by the government and the corporation added Harrington The constant social problems and distrust by the workers toward the management level of the corporations are signs that the workers are going to unite themselves sooner or later A crises is waiting to unfold said Harrington The DSA refers to trickle-down trickle economics the spending of money at the corporate level so it will trickle down to the people is less influential positions positions positions is not working Instead it itt means that the economy has been sold to the rich he said This will not be of benefit to the workers who made great personal personal personal per per- cutbacks to help business to stay afloat when Reagan started his poli poli- cy Harrington said they have been betrayed His message on welfare was equally as strong Take the rich off wel wel- fare Trickle-down Trickle is nothing more than welfare for the corporations He stated the DSA is not going to take over America but will con continue to improve the US U.S. so that the minorities and women have equal decision- decision making votes Asked why socialism doesn't work in Romania and the Eastern world Harrington responded that the Soviet model of Communism is is n not t the DSA's model of how socialism works i 11 i Editorial Comment Before the
