G Lord who has investigated over accidents while a law enforcement officer said that an advanced class in accident reconstruction will be offered through the School of External Programs and Continuing Continuing Continuing ing Education The 6 credit hour class is approved by the Peace Officers Standards and Training POST It is also available to others outside the area of law enforcement who may require the specialized skill Lord who is the first officer certified in the State in Accident Reconstruction tion is also teaching a Category I Accident Reconstruction class Fall Qu Quarter The advanced class will be offered Winter Quarter He left law enforcement nine years ago and organized his own consulting company investigating and testifying on the hows and whys of auto accidents He has been the expert in many criminal and civil cases in lawsuits where the circumstances of the accident can be determined by the position of a car after the accident Lord has testified for both the prosecution and the defense and has been hired by insurance companies who need this information to settle claims One of the few experts in accident reconstruction Lord is on call 24 hours a day He presently works with Salt Lake County West Jordan and South Jordan He also designed and wrote a computer program which is being used by Salt Lake County to assist investigators to reconstruct accidents This pr program gram was recently purchased by the Bureau of Land Management to supplement their safety program Since that department owns many vehicles vehicles vehicles cles they investigate any accidents in the bureau to learn how to prevent them from reoccurring The computer program allows specialized non-specialized officers tomake to tomake tomake make these determinations by inputting physical measurements and using screen layout and mathematics to determine the cause of certain accidents Lord who has taught for the Police Academy for several years said that new re regulations lations adopted by the Utah State Legislature have increased the training requirements For that reason POST is work working ng with to provide the accident reconstruction class with the idea of adding additional classes Ultimately a police science degree at the college may be an alternative alternative alternative tive according to Lord Since the class meets the federal standards required by POST students come from several intermountain states Lord said that sometimes local enforcement agencies support the cos cost of t tuition for their officers since they are required ed to gain 40 hours of specialized training each year Students who are interested in signing up for the class Winter Quarter should call for additional information Cost of the 6 hour credit credi t class is |
