R Jensen The Utah Intercollegiate Assembly is a student convention where students gain first hand exposure and experience in political al m matters More than student student representatives representatives from every college and university in In the state of Utah participated in the eleventh annual session session According to a resolution passed in in 1974 the UIA ULA is is more than a st student dent 1 legislature it is recognized as an official student arm of the Uta Utah State Legislature It is also the Legislative arm of the Utah Student Association the parent body of the Utah Council of presidents Vital student and nd instructor issues are discussed debated and voted on by the delegates from each of the colleges in Utah This years year's issues included higher tuition teacher salaries and the crisis in Lebanon The student representatives and senators chose five of the most important issues facing students in the state of Utah to present to Governor Scott Matheson Mather Mathe- Mathe r son and the state Legislature during the January session The issues are Education Package a group of five bills that deal specifically with education education education tion appropriations funding and quality There will also be recommendations for the five year accountancy program at the four year schools ten landlord ant issues advertising of alcohol in college newspapers tuition parity foreign language requirements and standards of evaluation and quality which in a I sense deals with transferability of credit Lt Governor D Dave ve Monson addressed the assembly Wednesday evening in ina r a keynote speech and encouraged student input in this manner Observing r the work the student regents have performed and the contributions they make 7 rr has convinced me that their input is extremely valuable That kind of input could have been very helpful in recent deliberations by the Governors Governor's Steering Steering Steering Steer Steer- ing Committee on Education r. It is unfortunate that the input was overlooked by the Governor in making appointments to that committee A student perspective on needs issues issues and solutions would have provided input from those who vho are most affected by the results of the deliberations Norm Bangerter Speaker of the Ho House se and a proponent of technical education education education tion also spoke to the Assembly Bangerter discussed several alternatives for rai raising taxes to improve education n i in Utah He also stressed the need to get the business a and d industrial industrial E trl co community involved Involve in In education bon as much as possible fc KeI Kerri Gardner ChaIrman the Board of Regents spoke on Thursday morning Miles Cap Ferry President of the Utah State Senate spoke to the Assembly Assembly Assem Assem- j bly Thursday after lunch Ferry stressed involvement in government Its your Government do something about it dont don't just complain about it John Scalon the American Ambassador to Poland spoke to the assembly on Friday afternoon Nov 4 He emphasized the need for America to try to regain i- i its it's lead in technology He said that quality education is the one sure way to L vj accomplish this At the banquet Friday evening Jon Huntsman an Nixon ex-Nixon aid spoke to the convention about the need to care about one another This years UIA convention was a success s with students from from all over the state participating was represented by the most professional people Laurie Guiver president could assemble only horus before the students students were to convene at the state capitol The original U UIA LA committee decided they would not attend the convention This left Guiver out on a limb She had only a few v hours to assemble a new committee to represent at the convention Guiver herself would attend to see that the job got done in a professional manner Every of the UIA ULA committee dropped dropp d out for various reasons except for J. J D. D Cooke Senator at It is their job as officers to represent in political functions Guiver said Cooke the only original member to support is a student senator-at- senator large Cooke said he learned a lot about political matters and the ways laws are formed Every student could gain a lot from an experience like this Cooke was chosen as committee member for the House Appropriations committee Guiver named Dennis Jensen to the U UIA LA Committee He was voted in to chair the House Commerce Committee Guiver said I received many favorable comments from delegates chairpersons and committee members about the unique and practical manner in which D. D Js J.'s House Commerce managed to accomplish an incredible amount of work vork on the legislation legislation legislation legis legis- lation assigned to his committee DJ has his own inimitable style of getting things accomplished Guiver also appointed Marty Jensen Sen Senator tor to the com com- Jensen was able to acquire video equipment for the filming of the U UIA LA convention was vas the only school at the assembly with any media coverage until the last hours of the final banquet when a team arrived from B. B BYU Y U. U Jensen has been asked to reproduce copies of the production for for use by the other schools in the the state Even the BYU media people wanted copies of the production Susan L. L in the General Education Department also represented Shreiner was chosen as committee member to the House Hous Appropriations committee ommittee She participated in much debate on the floor discussion inside the House of Representatives Helen Thompson was vas employed as Administrative Assistant to the dent Thompson was vas chosen for the Educational Thompson was also nominated to the Speaker Pro Tern of the House for next ye years year's rs r's convention She lost against three others in the final balloting but it was vas a final and gallant display of representation from |
