pushing to involve lawmakers statewide statewide statewide state state- wide in the problems facing the Skills Center At the Institutional Council meeting last week state legislators were invited to attend the meeting and tour the facility with Director Pat Latham State Representative Vivian Jensen attended the meeting and tour Her conclusions were two fold repair is needed on the building but the programs pro pro- programs grams are excellent in both quality and variety Jensen a former teacher was able to t objectively look at the Cente arid i it s Fi ig d. d She said the structure is not an eyesore eyesore eyesore eye eye- sore but rather is located well to suit the students attending She stated that the Center is not a liability to the state education system but a valuable valuable valuable able asset to the college system in Utah She said the buildings needs some repairs and allocations should be an object of consideration as the Center needs to become wheelchair accessible accessible access access- ible and building and fire codes applying applying ap ap- ap plying to the structure need to be given consideration Jensen was impressed with the var variety variety of programs available there pointing out that the computer science classes were well structured and the remedial help available was excel excel- lent She said this combination of remedial and computer work is effective effective effective tive in job placement for students who use the programs to become employable upon completion of programs programs programs pro pro- grams at the at-the the Center She commended Director of the Skills Center Pat Latham saying someone with that kind of enthusiasm and determination is needed in inthe inthe inthe the skills center system Latham is well known for her backing of the Centers Center's class structure and advocacy of the skills center as a valuable part of the higher educational system in Utah Jensen is aware of the purpose the system serves in Utah She has family affiliations at both campuses cam cam- She said the skills center is not nota a liability in inthe the community but butis is a apart apart apart part of the college network in Ashford a second year student in word processing r received a plaque for her volunteer work during the 1983 spring floods The award was presented by Governor Scott Mathe Mathe- son Ashford said she wanted to help and had contacted the city flood control control con con- but no help was needed She had already arranged with the Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue a unit she is active with to obtain two ton ten-ton flatbed trucks The director of had made previous arrangements arrangements ar ar- ar through Ryder Truck and Rental who picked up the complete tab for all expenses incurred during flood operations Determined to help although she had been declined by the city Ashford Ash Ash- Ashford ford phoned the Salt Lake County flood control offering her service How soon can you report was their response As soon as I hang up this phone she replied Do you have a truck the county asked Would you settle for two ton ten flatbed trucks she returned For the next nine days at twelve hours a Jordan River Did she get tired Sure she said but when you love being a part of helping people and working with a volunteer team being tired becomes secondary People are Ashford's hobby She loves helping whenever she can It must be inherent she said My Grandfather and Grandmother were both in police work Helping people became a part of me She has been with Salt Lake Assist Unit 1 1 for eight
