J Letters Editorials zt orza s Dear Editor While Teague Eskelson made a sincere effort to tell the problems involving the Presidents President's house I feel feela a few points need to be stressed so that everyone reading the articles will have a little better under under- standing 1 The most important part of a project project project pro pro- is that it meets the needs of the students student's training 2 The original intent intent of of the building construction department was to have havethe havethe havethe the foundation placed by a contractor because the students involved had already had the training in concrete However since the plans were not r r ready in time it was decided the students stu stu- i. i r dents with their approval should install the foundation 3 A partial building permit allowing fo footings tings and foundation was obtained and work started on October 6 At this point the class had a plot and foundation plan It should be pointed out that neither drawing was complete comple complete com com- althis at this point in time 4 After the foundation was in place work was held up because the drawing showing the heating and plumbing that was was' to be installed under the basement floor was not available The contract for this hi phase ot of was not let until December 16 5 Because plans were not complete a building permit could not be applied for and the plumbing and heating under the floor could not be inspected It was not until February 16 that the permit was finally issued A delay from November 19 wh when n foundation was placed to February 16 6 The cause of the delay can be simply stated stated insufficient insufficient drawings 7 7 Some minor mistakes were made Mistakes can easily be made in construction construction con con- but were only compounded c continued next column In in this this' case case because of the lack of complete drawings There was a statement statement statement state state- ment made in the first article that the job was shut down bec because use of mistakes mistakes mistakes mis mis- takes that would affect the building structurally The work was not stopped because of this but because of the lack of drawings Any mistake that would affect the strength of the building has been corrected 8 While those of us involved in the training of our students made a sincere sincere sincere sin sin- cere effort to supplement their training training training train train- ing with other projects the students did suffer In twenty-four twenty years of te teaching building construction at this school this is the first time I have seen the building construction department unable to provide a consistent logical sequence of training for students and be forced into a situation leading to complaints f from students and an investigative investigative investigative type article published in the school paper Ross E.
