is causing concern at Utah Technical College at Salt Lake We are delighted obviously to have had books magazines and other items checked out during 1982 says librarian Alex Stecker And the gate count which reflects the number of people who come into the library totaled last year That's a percent gain over the previous year The tough part Mr Stecker laments is that weve we've made these incredible gains with slightly less staff Its It's no wonder they're worn out The Utah Tech library is open nearly days a year It is accessible to students 13 hours a day The full- full time library staff including Mr Stecker numbers only 3 on the Redwood Redwood Redwood Red Red- wood Road campus However there is a time half-time professional librarian available during evening hours We can count on about people a day the librarian notes We Weare are one of the few ed educational libraries in inthe inthe inthe the state where students do not basically basically basically basic basic- ally use the facilities as a social gathering place Utah Tech students evidently come to the library principally principally principally ally to study Most unfortunately our seating capacity is often fully allocated We Weare Weare Weare are turning away as many as 50 or 60 students a day who want to sit down and study in the library itself Since coming to Utah Technical College in January 1981 Mr Stecker has introduced reforms and change in attitude toward the facility so that there has been a percent increase in items checked out in the two year period Additional to traditional library holdings the media center division of the library has provided provide more than half the colleges college's student population with television viewing privileges of educational materials on videotape In contemplating the squeeze on space both for student study areas and for book stacks Mr Stecker says Frankly we are in a terrible crunch The student population is growing dramatically We desperately need to accommodate those who wish to study within the library And we also need space for additional relevant technical and other volumes to be stacked At the same time we realize the financial hardship on all areas of the college and indeed the entire state In normal times an evaluation by bythe bythe bythe the Northwest Association of Schools Schools' and Colleges could be quite devastating devastating devastating ing to the library area In terms of numbers of books per time full-time enrolled enrolled enrolled en en- rolled student we are quite lacking And too I am concerned about staffing We need clerical and other help both in the library and media center Our people are tremendously loyal and dedicated But the use of the library by so many students seeking learning is very draining on just three time full-time people Utah Technical College is a head- head hands and and institution and the library is vital as a support to the quality practical instruction given in
