C Grover I welcome the inclusion in this issue of the letters to the editor questioning the editorials of the past two issues of Points West I Ishall Ishall Ishall shall indicate to the readers that there has been no attempt on the part of this editor or the staff to edit for content any submissions from the reading audience While the viewpoints section of this newspaper newspaper newspaper news news- paper has been established during my tenure I feel that I must take this time to apologize for a misunderstanding misunderstanding misunderstanding mis mis- understanding that has developed over the Viewpoints section Viewpoints is a section for free full and frank discussion of the issues confronting this institution and the residents of this community As a result may I say that the issues and stories under discussion here are not news stories The article appearing under my signature dealing with Rape and Rape Fears and the article dealing with the Student Senate discussion dealing with j financial aids are editorials l According to the Merriam J Webster Dictionary available through the SL bookstore the entry for editorial on page 1 indicates that an editorial is t expressing the opinion of the 1 writer The Random House i dictionary entry on page defines editorial as an article or statement in a newspaper or other medium presenting the opinion of the editor publisher or owner Webster further defines on page that opinion is a belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge held by byone byone one person or group of people While I agree with the writer that legitimate news stories need the backing on facts I further say that as an editor and a person with 1 an opinion like all readers I have havethe havethe havethe the right to the opinions expressed |
