Show f EDITORIAL Time has reached a critical stage for a student fee increase at SL An increase is needed seriously in the area of amortizing bonds sold for the Student Union Building Not only must students pay the bonds but it is also their sole responsibility to pay for the costs of furnishings and landscaping the building If these obligations are met the Student Union Building will open but be an empty shell The bonds will be amortized over a 30 year period If an increase would be accepted by the student- student body these bonds could be paid off much sooner An increase would also allow the purchase of furniture furniture furni furni- ture carpeting or land land- Without an increase we are a barrel We would have a beautiful Student Union Building owned and operated by the students students stu stu- dents but it will be bare and inoperable unless we can furnish the building The second area where an increase in increase increase in- in crease is badly needed is the area of student activity fees It has been at least 8 years since this figure has been increased Needless to say the time has come to increase fees Due to an increase in student enrol enrol- we have many more activities to offer the student Not all students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents have the same interest so many more programs have to be started All of this costs money Some students say they do not use or need any of the programs of or activities offered Little do they r tig realize they probably utilize one or i imore more student funded programs j I everyday I I SL has maintained the lowest lowest lowest low low- j i est fees in the state of Utah for I many years Some people might say 4 our activities show it If you dont don't i x have the money to fund these activities as well as intramural and i intercollegiate athletics assemblies dances and everything else that I goes along with extra curricular t activities we will remain at the J current level of quality Does this I leave something to be desired Many programs are suggested by students that would really interest I Ido many students unfortunately we wedo wedo do not have the funds to supply these programs and activities For example the lowest fees of any college in the state are at SL per year Dixie college another two year school pays a year Schools with high f activity fees enjoy an array of I activities we can not offer I Provo second lowest on the scale r receives a year We would J like to be comparable with our sister school and offer the same i quality Like wide vari vad- van van- I ety I An increase in student fees has been thoroughly investigated by the student executive council and student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent senate Both bodies have voted unanimously on this increase This editorial should answer a wide variety of questions that students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents have posed and why our programs offered are so scant |
