Show comments of the recent legislature by sen donald T adams returning from a three week legislative session in the state capitol sunday morning donald T adams said im glad to be home he continued our anticipated one week stay lengthened into 19 days when gov J bracken lee added to his agenda many controversial and surprise issues we had expected a short routine session to approve the recommendations of the sixty man commission appointed by the governor to study the states elementary school problems and to pass laws necessary to implement the recommendations as suggested by the legislative council through a study of the sixty man commission report the surprise item of the session was the governors request to 0 o abandon all junior state colleges it became a hotly contested issue and much bitterness appeared among the representatives especially those of the effected area the situation was vas partially relieved when the presidency announced the church would operate at its own expense the dixie weber and snow colleges all previously church owned if abandoned b by the state carbon college its buildings and property will be turned over to the carbon county school district other legislative action gives to the school additional money but it also gives additional financial burdens such as being beina responsible for its portion of ta tax assessment and collection an increase in the cost of election expenses pen ses and loosing the benefit of federal monies coming to the local school district one bill passed over the governors veto was an additional two cent tax on a cigarette pack it is estimated will be added to the school funds from this measure |
