now no w rigging up and will spud in its new well over the weekend the drill site of the new venture tu re is is i approximately eight miles southwest of moab in the southeast quarter of section 36 township 26 south range 20 east S L M the elevation of the well is approximately four hundred feet higher than the mason no 1 discovery well which is about two thousand feet southwest of this new location the mason no I 1 drilled by americol petroleum inc with M G mason as its operator came in january 18 1951 open hole and is said to have been the biggest thing seen in the rocky mountain area the well was tested before killing to set pipe and place on production and is estimated to have flowed at various rates from to barrels of gravity paraffin base oil per day with three to five million feet of natural gas that was rich in casing head gasoline MANY MAN Y PROBLEMS the mason no I 1 was beset by many almost problems there was no road pipeline tank farm or in short no facilities to get the oil out and above all no casing in the hole or mud to hold the well in the only means of access was by boat or barge down the colorado river immediately mason secured chester 1 I Garlin garlinger today is being cleaned of a vast amount of mud necessarily pumped into the zone for its protection and there is a good possibility that it may even yet be brought in as a good producer however definite plans are being formulated for the drilling of americous Ameri Arneri cols no 2 well or whip stocking mason no 1 if i it t does not respond to pumping petroleum inc is cu operating to join with this road directly from the well site of the no 1 the work is progressing nicely and is expected to be roughed out in about two weeks the terrain is really rugged and the fortitude and courage of these men in their foresight and tenacity is to be admired EQUIPMENT AND OIL RIG A one hundred twenty two foot steel derrick has been erected over the concrete foundation blasted out of solid rock and a big easco drilling rig has been moved in place to commence the operation A new barge was built to take this heavy equipment 20 miles down the colorado river and over four hundred tons have been transported by water to the location on top of the dome water is pumped up from the colorado river and a one thousand barrel tank has been installed at the well site for a water supply we are informed that 27 men are employed by the company and round the clock operation and drilling is a matter of hours the first objective is a honeycomb sandy lime strata in the paradox series of the pennsylvania formation and should be reached at approximately 2400 feet this corresponds in depth to the gusher shafer well no 1 that was drilled in 1925 by the midwest exploration company located approximately 2000 feet southeast of no 1 and if it is not wet at this horizon it should be a big producer if however this zone is wet and no other horizon of importance is encountered the second objective is the discovery zone dubbed the mason lime in the mason no I 1 at feet in depth or approximately feet in depth at the location of no 1 the difference in depth is due to the difference in elevation this horizon is said to be in the bottom of the pennsylvanian series or the contact between the pennsylvania and the series DEEPER PRO PROSPECTS S according to the best information engineers and geologists the mississippian and devonian series the pennsylvanian should be even more prolific in production but only the drill will tell the true story suffice it to say that if the lower horizons are anywhere near as prolific as the americous Ameri cols mason no I 1 discovery in the pennsylvanian then it may be said that moab will soon be certainly the oil capital of the it will be the program of petroleum inc to drill its first well to either the first or second major horizon and then systematically offset drill along the high of the anticline until the land is drilled up exploration to the deeper horizon will be carried on simultaneously and if deeper production is found in the mississippian and devon an series a systematic development of these horizons will be proved
