Show so BLANDING BLAN DING 00 BLUFF CEMETERY RECORD COMPLETED BY BLANDING WOMAN mrs luretia lyman ranny has just completed the record of the bluff cemetery from the year 1880 to 1952 and has it compiled in a booklet form where it can be referred to ve very r Y vital records church records record has been gathered from easily the information for this bonal knowledge mrs ranny tombstone inscriptions and per family records Record sv old journals has spent many years writing letters and hunting for much of the information some of the to in almost a miraculous man information she happened on ner there are several transients buried there with no information but the name but the information for all church members is complete mrs ranny bew knew a great the cemetery on the hill and many of the peo people ale buried in and in many cases of their tra can tell of their accomplishments gic deaths she remembers the time when the father and four of the decker children died of diphtheria dip theria in a single week the five graves in in a row and the dates tell the tragic story roswell stevens a son of roswell steven and sibyl spencer was the first person to be hurried in the bluff cemetery he died may 4 1880 and because of lack of equipment in those days he was buried in a casket made from his own wagon box joseph smith once said the place where a man is buried is sacred to me mrs ranney shares the same feeling with him and has made a wonderful contribution to this generation only recently the assignment to stake Ge committees is to make a record of all the he t cemeteries in their stake A copy of the bluff cemetery record has been placed in the L D S Ge library in salt lake by mrs ranney one has also been placed in the state capitol at the request of the I 1 state board of health another copy has been presented to the blanding ward because bluff is now a part of the blanding ward about four years ago mrs ranney compiled a record of the blanding cemetery when it had been in use 40 years A copy of this was placed in the ge library and a copy is now being typed for the state board of health the town of blanding and the wards have a copy of this record at the time the blanding record was completed there were about graves in the cemetery and there are about in the bluff cemetery PLAQUE AT MARBLE CANYON HONORS NORMAN AND DORIS A group of river lov lovers ers who call themselves the Canyo have just unveiled a plaque at marble canyon in honor of the late norman and doris I 1 mary abbot of south carolina carolina and others helped to make the event possible the headquarters of the celebration was at cliff dwellers lodge where the art greens helped to make the affair a success mrs mother of norman and joan and sandra daughters of norman and doris were special guests and the girls unveiled the plaque barry goldwater was master of ceremonies and wayne mcconkie offered the ot lenina drayer there were present representatives from the governors of utah and arizona frank wright don smith and others who manned the boats at different times for mr sang the river song at noon friday at cliff dwellers lodge the food was prepared in the form of a smorgasbord and in the evening a group of about en joyed enjoyed a barbeque barbecue bar beque thursday and friday evening picture shows and slides w were ere shown of some of the river trips and other outstanding scenery in that locality the screen was out of doors saturday morning at 11 many of the group went to watch the boats start on their journey to lake mead some of those who attended the celebration from blanding were mr and mrs marvin lyman mr and mrs ray lyman mr air and mrs airs vint jones mr and mrs parl redd mrs dorothy astel mr and mrs jay redd were also members of this party MISS ERMA LEE NIELSON BECOMES BRIDE OF SCOTT A HURST miss erma lee nielson n became the bride of scott A hurst in manti temple rites performed july 11 the bride is a daughter of mr and mrs J E nielson of blanding parents of the bridegroom are mr and mrs philip hurst also of blanding president lewis anderson of the manti mant temple performed the ceremony after which the bride gro grooms orns parents honored the pair at a wedding breakfast at the manti cafe those in attendance besides the newlyweds and their parents were mr and mrs leonard hurst and mr air and mrs arthur hurst grandparents of scott and leonard the home of the brides parents was the scene of the reception saturday evening july 12 the new mrs hurst wore a ballerina length gown of nylon and lace she carried a bouquet of white carnations miss peggy nielson was maid of honor to her sister and mabel june hurst and barta jean lyman were bridesmaids leonard hurst stood as best man for his brother the young couple were further honored sunday at a turkey dinner at the home of mr and mrs bart lyman given by venice lyman yvonne keele and helen nielson special guests besides the young couple and all the J E nielson family were mr and mrs phil hurst mr and mrs leonard hurst mr and mrs lyman redd and mabel june hurst scott and erma lee were the speakers in the blanding ward sacrament meeting sunday evening they were also honored as returned missionaries by speaking at the chapel service at the manti temple the day of their marriage they left monday to go on a honeymoon to Cab Cah fornia where scott is stationed in the marine corps MILDRED WRIGHT JACK SEITZ MARRIED JULY 12 miss mildred wright and jack A seitz became man and wife july 12 at a ceremony performed in the st george temple president harold R snow officiated the new mrs seitz is the daughter of mr and mrs lawrence wright of blanding mrs lila seitz of veyo utah is the mother of the bridegroom A reception was held in veyo july 12 and invitations are out for one in blanding july 18 BLAND BLANDING ING WOMAN IS HONOR HONORED ED ON BIRTHDAY thirty five women gathered at a lawn party at the home of mrs airs mary stevens friday afternoon in in honor of mrs lucretia Ran birthday her birthday is not until august 19 but because she will be out of town at that time her friends thought it best to have it now the afternoon was spent in visiting doing fancy work and playing rook A lovely luncheon was served to the group at mrs ranney received many useful and beautiful gifts PENNY PARTY AT SKATING RINK WAS BIG SUCCESS friday evening the carroll skating rink was the scene of an interesting little party it was called a penny party each child was admitted to the affair for the price of a penny and each time the music played he went on the floor for the price of another penny there were several of the skating club group standing at booths where candies gum and other penny articles could be bought most of the children had a spending good time FIRE STRUCK AGAIN AT MIKESELL PROPERTY the fire department rushed to the home of mr and mrs roy hoy mikesell Mik csell monday afternoon at the sound of the siren and found the barn in flames it was too far gone to save anything but surrounding property was protected from the sparks the barn was covered by insurance but quite a bit of baled hay was lost the lne fire started with small boys playing with matches the Mike sells have recently moved into a lovely new home but their old home was partially destroyed by fire about two years ago LOUISE REDD RETURNS FROM VACATION TRIP mrs louise redd spent the month of june at the home of her son donald redd and family in philadelphia she enjoyed very much her visit with her three little grandchildren some of the places of interest they visited were new york independence hall betsy ross home valley forge gettysburg and washington D C there they have about 12 ships in moth balls so to speak until they are needed again among them was ian an aircraft carrier and a hospital ship don and his family are very busy and very happy he works part time in the navy law lav office and the remainder of the time in the hospital ile he works ln in the branch presidency and there are a great many medical students musical students and nurses who attend church at that particular branch about a third of the membership is made up of young converts mrs redd returned to blanding last week ashton harris spent sunday in dolores with a committee from there to plan a missionary conference in the near future it is a yearly affair and mr harris was appointed by the group last year to be chairman of the day this year mr guy hurst writes that he and mrs hurst are enjoying very much their mission in california they are busy from early until late but they like that they have been companions until quite recently but at the present time mrs hurst is working in another town with an older lady and guy is working with the district her home in farmington N mex and spent a few days at the home of her mother while she was here the family went to bluff for an outing they swam cooked their supper and had a right good time mrs lucretia ranney was a special guest mr and mrs airs fred lyman enjoyed a visit this week from mr and mrs john nielson and mr and mrs don melville and family while they were here they made a trip to mesa verde and traveled the million dollar highway dr and mra mathison spent four or five days in salt lake I 1 I 1 this week they attended to business and returned home tuesday night lelia and eve lynn palmer I 1 linda lyman and lela black spent a day or two in cortez and durango last week among other things they did some shopping donald and ora bayles gene and ann porter hanson and nadine bayles kay and laray lakay bradford eve lynn palmer and richard perkins went to the iolue blue mountain tuesday evening they cooked their supper in the I 1 long leaf pines and enjoyed the I 1 scenery up there I 1 i mrs helen ranney holyoak an and d her fo four ur sons visited in i bland blanding ing from their home in moab friday and saturday mrs holyoak attended her mothers birthday party and brothers and sisters mr and mrs max roberts and small son spent a day or two in blanding at the home of mr and mrs airs henry lyman last week mrs roberts is a niece of mr lyman and a daughter of carlle carlie lyman who lived in blanding a number of years year sago ago they all spent one day at the elk mountain before the roberts family continued on to its home in mcgill nev mr and mrs ash harris are happy over the arrival of a new baby at the county hospital saturday evening the young lady is the sixth daughter to arrive continued on page 6 BLANDING continued from page 2 at the harris home little jim joe still holds the record of being the only boy in the family mr and mrs john powell and children spent several days at the home of mr and mrs albert R lyman last week mrs powell is the former edith lyman they have returned to their home in salt lake the john helquist family enjoyed a visit from maurice last weekend he is still in service but expects to be discharged in about six weeks mr and mrs L lawrence awrence hawkins have had word that gordon will leave korea for home this week it be too long until he will be back in blanding francis and joe lyman made a trip to salt lake the first of the week they were accompanied by susan and kermit who have gone to the doctor for a checkup lynn stevens and miss jeanette crisler who has returned to her home after a visit at the phil hurst home the past three weeks mrs louise redd is enjoying a visit from her daughter mrs jessie may mcdonald who with mr mcdonald has lived the past two years in logan mr mcdonald attended school thera and jessie may taught they will live in blanding this winter while mr mcdonald teaches industrial du arts and science in the san juan county high school francis black has gone to ft benning georgia following a leave from the marine corps he finished his boot training at san diego and will now study in a school of mechanics richard perkins is home on leave from camp lawton in the northwest he will return there in about ten days |
