Show URGES HEAVY DEER HARVEST the board the big game control was given the support of the utah fish and game commission this week in an action board can legally take to make a maximum harvest of game animals in the highly critical winter range areas the commission which is without authority to set the hunts this being a matter for the game board recommended that the board give the sportsmen a chance to harvest these nuisance deer in season rather than to have them lost because of poor ranges or other control causes two million walleyed pike eggs are now being processed at the karns kams hatchery they came from new york as a gift to the utah fish and game department last hast year the first plantings of walleyed pike were made in utah waters in an attempt to introduce this fine game fish in biologically intermediate waters that have not previously been producers of any appreciable numbers of game fish at that time the fry from one million pike eggs hatched at the kamas plant were placed in equal numbers in three such waters these were echo pine view and hyrum reservoirs it is planned to supplement these original lantin lanti rings from the eggs now being hatched at kamas about half of the pike try fry will go into the above three reservoirs the balance of these fish will be planted in other such waters over the state the will include the sevier river drainage and other areas one hundred and forty partridge were released in the clear creek canyon area of southern utah last las t week director J perry egan had this to say in their release band the planting of these fine upland game birds marks another milestone in our efforts to introduce into inlo utah other exotic species that will contribute to the success of one of our greatest participant sports through the cooperation of the U S fish fis 1 l and wildlife service we are attempting to ito establish this and other upland birds by them in their native habitat and then releasing them in the wild stage into similar habitat in utah the chudars just released were aped in turkey by dr gardner bump they were shipped to us by air we are watching this experiment closely and feel that it has every chance of success the planting of these wild chudars is in addition to previous stocking of two areas with hatchery raised birds two hundred such birds were planted last fall in the nine mile country near price und and about in west box elder county supple mental plants of about birds were released in these two sections during the past two weeks time from hatchery stocks about 1700 chudars at the game farm near price and another at the springville Spring ville farm form a brood stock from which it is expected that several thousand birds will be raised for making quantity plants in other chosen areas later this year the carries the nickname of the starvation bird because of his liking for rough semi arid and terrain much such land is to be found in utah no is from the where cultivated lands are concerned since he is 13 not known to ito frequent such lands his average weight is near a pound these and other reasons highlight the departments hope that there may one day be of chudars in lots 0 of utah every effort is being made to make this hope a reality |
