Show Bountiful man appointed Jim L. Carroll, of Bountiful, an energy and business management specialist with broad experience in technological development, has been appointed chairman of the Department of Technology at Brigham Young University. The appointment was announced by L. Douglas Smoot, dean of the College of Engineering and Technology. Carroll will replace re-place Max C. Raisor, who was earlier ear-lier named associate dean of the college. Carroll comes to BYU with extensive ex-tensive experience in the development develop-ment of alternative energy sources. He worked with Energy Science Inc. developing, installing and operating wind-powered generators gener-ators and engaged in projects relating relat-ing to the production and distribu tion of natural gas. He has worked as a consultant on several co-generation co-generation programs. He was responsible for the advanced adv-anced technology component of a NASA-sourced proposal for the Space Station to be launched in 1992. From 1981-84, as vice president of research and development, Carroll Car-roll held worldwide responsibility for researching diamond-drilling products and down hole tools with Norton Christensen Drilling. In this capacity, he organized and directed programs of product inception, in-ception, development and market introduction. Graduating with a bachelor's degree de-gree from BYU in 1951, Carroll then pursued additional studies at the University of California- Berkeley and Oregon State. He completed the course and thesis work for a doctoral degree in psy-sical psy-sical chemistry from the University Universi-ty of Utah. Carroll, a 1947 graduate of Grand County High School in Moab, is married to Gwen Mecham, formerly of Springville and Provo. They have three children. chil-dren. Mrs. Carroll has been a hostess hos-tess for United Airlines for more than 20 years and served a mission to South Africa for the LDS Church. Carroll played freshman football at BYU and was stage manager for Bountiful's production of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." He has served as a teacher, president of the Sunday School and Elders quorum, and is currently a High Priest in the LDS Church. |
