Show UTAH STATE EXTENSION BOMB ECONOMICS 18 of t ASTL ari uth utah state atri asti cuc CeLl an nd couty comm Us io EL c pera american farmers are doing a magnificent job of feeding our people population of the un united cited states is increasing at the rate of two million each year during the past 50 years population has doubled from 76 million in 1900 to million in 1950 each morning more people sit down to breakfast in america than did the day before by 1955 there will be about 10 million more people to feed current surpluses are both temporary and artificial can farmers of utah and the 47 other states produce enough food to mat meet our increasing standard of living and population growth this tremendous demand will put considerable pressure on our farmers ability to produce through efficient production and marketing it can be done the me average civilian in the united states each year eats eggs 25 to 30 pounds of poultry pounds of beef pork veal ind lamb and pounds of milk says the Arne american rican meat institute if our people continue to eat at this level and there is a 10 mil tion increase in population by 1955 at present levels of production there will be need for more mare hens broilers turkeys more hogs more beef cattle and more dairy cattle just to feed the increase in population add to this the number of animals and poultry needed to feed the present population and it is easy to see the potential need for more livestock and poultry production says the institute when one considers these foods in relation to livestock requirements the challenge appears greater it takes six bushels of corn or its in oats barley or other fed grain to produce six pounds of meat at present consumption levels it requires 25 bushels of feed grains to produce meat for one person at this rate another million bushels of corn or feed grain and will be required to produce meat poultry eggs and dairy products for the population increase in the next five years considering these facts along with possible increased emphasis on consumption of animal products problems of the present staggering surpluses of farm products are virtually eliminated I 1 I 1 A C BULLETIN I 1 the tock stock grazing capacity of six million acres of utah range land can be increased to graze an additional head of cattle or sheep A grass re seeding campaign to make this increase possible was launched at a recent me meeting eting of interested federal and state agencies A coordinated program of establishing tab lishing demonstration areas was decided upon by representatives of utah state agricultural college extension service and experiment peri ment station the forest service soil conservation bureau production and marketing adm utah state land board and the bureau of land management grassi re seeding demonstration plots will be established in three or four areas of utah as part of this campaign with each agency cooperating further plans will be discussed at a meeting of the utah USDA council in the governors boa board rd room state capitol aug 11 county USDA councils will be asked to take the initiative in arousing local interest in range re seeding the extension service has recently published two pamphlets what grass means to utah and recommendation for range re seeding in utah A third one is planned on its economic importance and methods of planting these bulletins are available at county extension offices one of the needs is for additional grass seed with which to plant waste areas according to dr carl extension service director and chain chairman nai of the joint meeting held at intermountain forest service headquarters in ogden where fertile soil and adequate water are available utah conditions are ideally adapted to pro production of this seed dr said the ginger hill 4 H club met at mrs harveys wednesday at 2200 we finished some of the articles we had already started june moss was a visitor this week our next meeting will be held at joyce Mc Donalds club reporter ilene miller the six successful sewers met at club leader mrs pearl lewis tuesday morning we planned our 14 4 H outing trip and worked on aprons which will be displayed at the 4 H exhibit at the county fair the next meeting will be held tuesday aug 15 at reporter mel rae black |
