Show 7 water wa water ter six monticello men made a survey of water supply sources last week visiting each of the areas where springs are tapped for the towns culinary supply spending most of the day tramping from one canyon to another walking the miles of water line on the mountain were john N butler resident manager for galigher company H T hutchison maintenance mait maite cnance nance forman and ralph robson also of galigher company donald adams eugene shelley and platte lyman made up the rest of the party heber frost who supervised the original installation of much of the system on the mountain also went to the mountain but did not take the hike because of a lame foot the party went first to the point in north creak where the road crosses it at what is known as innes cabin from there they i hiked ver the hill into copper queen gulch and to its head where ses veral large springs were brought into the line in the federal relief project of 1934 it wes forand foi nd there that not more than 20 percent of the available water is going goin into the line due to several breaks bre aks in the line and congestion of feeder pipes the next step wass was to examine the several springs in north creek together with the open pipe in the creek bottom all of these inlets seemed to be functioning it is estimated that at this point alone more than enough water to supply the towns needs is entering the pipelines the party ther then followed the line around the mountainside to where it joins into the older line coming C from bankhead springs they then doubled back to inspect this spring it was discovered here that a large snow slide probably a year ago had wrecked most of the gathering facilities so that only a small fraction of the available water was finding its way into the theline line lire T to repair this da mage it would take a bulldozer to clear away the debris and new feeder lines and boxes would have to be installed A leak in the main line was discovered between bankhead and pole canyon which could be serious if the water should become low at the supply sources from bankhead the party followed the line around to pole canyon where built a storage reservoir several years ago at this point the main line carrying all the water from the sources sources named is connected to the line from pole canyon springs which were the first springs Z t to be tapped for the towns use ap proximately 33 years ago the pole canyon line was also carrying a good stream in the reservoir however there is a large valve in the line which is broken and allows a leakage of estimated by mr hutchison Mt chison to be gallons a minute much more than enough to take caro care of all the needs of the town even with this serious leak it was found that all the line would carry is coming through the power house the real bottleneck in the whole system and the chief cause of water shortage in the west side of town is the fact that the ten inch line from the power plant to the had had house on town side of north creek is not large enough to carry an adequate supply with as little fall as there is i to the head house several suggestions were advanced for the corrm correction tion of this difficulty but action from the town board will await a complete report from mr butler and ana mr Hut hutchiison Hutch chrison cison it does appear however that there is enough water available for a town of several times the present size of monticello and that it will not be an expensive program to eliminate the limiting fa factors tors unless the water is many times lower at the head sources ft at other ames oi of 1 the conr trouble is not ones one of supply but of transmission from the source to the distributing system |
