Show pauline ransdell delivers winning conservation talk at me he S the following is a copy of tho the winning talk given by pauline ransdell in a recent conservation speech at 31 monticello J junior high school pauline won over a field of fifty four seventh and eighth grade students tragic things are happening to our soil our topsoil is being washed away often forming tickles holes and gullies wild 1 life ife and farm stock are over grazing our fields helping to destroy our topsoil often making it difficult to grew useful plants thus our food supply is dwindling away there are many v ways ays to pre vant evils of wind and water cover crops such as kudzu which is a fast growing plant that requires very little water will help rebuild damaged topsoil clover and alfalfa are cover craps which serve as good wholesome food for our stock besides beside protecting 0 the soil from erosion contouring is a plan used very commonly on hilly areas it con eis elsas ts of plowing and working around the hill or mountain rather wan up and down the water seeps in the furrows made by the contours to urs moistening the soil terracing is another way of preventing erosion but is used as a last resort and usually in the drier climates little walls or dam like formations are made around the land which is being preserved forming run off channels for water wood lands are helpful too because they surround the land covering and protecting it from forceful winds they also soak up the harmful water to aid their own growth rotation of 0 crops helps too if the rotation has definite periods this process is used because some of the minerals are taken from the ground by one crop but are replaced by others we must save and protect our grass because it saves the top soil by producing a binding and clinging root system which prevents soil from being washed or blown away are we willing to sacrifice time and effort now to save our soil for the future |
