Show record no of tourists visit natural bridges by josephine bayles mr i wiley wilcy redd custodian of the natural bridges reports that 1800 tourists registered at the ranger headquarters at the edwin bridge this summer there were others who made the trip anen nen mr redd was not there and it was impossible to get an exact count on them according to bates wilson in charge of the arches national monuments at moab the travel ravel to the natural bridges was vas sixteen percent ahead of t the h tra travel LWI 1 in 1948 mr redd and his wife L 1 7 clr d very much enjoy the contacts chev make with tourists at their little a success the redda redds have relieved reci eved deop teop people ae from all over the country and many of them write back to thank the redds for their courtesy and kindness in making their trip a success ess the redds have relieved reci eved pictures from many famous photographers grap hers who have really caught the beauty of san juan scenery jesse L arrived on sept beat 25 and spent a full week making an archeological archaeological arche investigation in the erea accordine Accor diny to reports from ranger redd there were verb many interest interesting inq finds m made ade maintenance man winbourn and bupt supt wilson of moab arrived the night of oct 14 and spent three days constructing a permanent roof on the ranger headquarters N U T ISS A BT R most of the tourists remember their trip to the brid bridges brides es for its beauty and pleasure but occasionally ally ore one remember 5 ais trip for its unpleasantness A young fellow erom crom texas in october made the hike to the caroline careline and augusta bridges in the company of two photographers when they long periods of time trying to get just the right shadow on their picture he became tired and attempted to go back to camp alone when the photographers finally az arrived rived at camp and the man from was not there it was vas decided at once that he was lost mr redd and mr baum went immediately in search of their guest but the night was so dark it was decided a waste of time to search before morning the wife was worried frantic every poss possible dinger danger that could happen to a man was considered by different members of the group that night early in the morning mr texas came into camp he had gone several miles in the wrong direction before he discovered he was lost by the time he had discovered his mistake and had gone back to the augusta bridge he was too weak and exhausted to try to find his way home he just leaned against a ledge and stayed until morning during the night he saw lightning in the distance and thought mr redd was lighting flares to guide him back to camp but re he was too tired to take advantage of them mr redd was asked to make lidders ladders to be used at the bhe caroline bridge and the work was to be done this thia daiji the th fir trees to be ased lsd in making the ladders were picked out on the elk mountain but due to the early storm the work has been postponed until next spring the largest party to see the bridges thus thiis summer was a group from dolores and cortez there were forty nine of them and they also enjoyed a big beef steak fry before they made the hike there are more utah tourists go to see the bridges than any other state colorado has the next largest amount and ad california was third in 1948 california was 2nd and mr henderson the editor of the desert magazine was a guest this summer the Go government verent officials have asked that the caroline bridge be called the kachina Xa china the edwin the Owa chimo and the augusta the sipapu this might be interesting interest ins to those of you who went to ahe L bridges on horseback horse back ia A the good old days and knew them by the old names |
