despite the arrests the system was still working because it was needed py jay the church to maintain contact beti between veen its priests and their bishops As a point in proof of the continued t inu e d operation of the system it was vas pointed out cut that parish priests st still illare are sending in declarations to the government that they would rather go to jail than obey a new church control bill which the com proposed to enact PRIESTS who have hake been sending in these declarations say they will never accept appointment from anyone except their freely acting church superiors the baseball fan in the nation FOR at a brooklyn theater all the world series baseball games were to be shown via television on the theaters movie screen true it was an experimental project for which the claims wheat cotton props high according to senator aitken R vt present farm aid law provides vi des for high price props for wheat and cotton ands and he declared that anyone who contends otherwise is guilty of misrepresentation the senator was defending the flexible farm support law he helped write in the preceding congress and which bears his name barring new farm aid legislation the ait claims southern operators withhold welfare fund cash in the north trees were showing the first sparks of autumnal color in the west snow already had fallen n in one state fall was in the air and the crisp sharpness the thinning sunlight all indicated the time was right and as is his wont john L lewis knew it the united mine workers chief was threatening coal strike and at a time when the threat would be most effective BUT AS USUAL his threat was based baked apparently upon the highest ideals there was no question of higher wages or shorter working hours instead lewis charged that southern coal operators had bled the un unions 1 i ons welfare fund white by withholding payments lewis did not mention the word strike t but bt he said a continuation of the default in payments might cause reactions deterrent to the constructive progress of the industry however hoever everybody on the sidelines in washington c construed ons trued that statement to hold a strike threat the national coal association advised its members that lewis language was a direct threat and added no mention is made of the fact that there is no contract and no agreement to pay LEWIS LETTER to the coal operators declared the southern operators to be in default of payments m ants to the welfare fund since july 1 and said the defaulted payments are large and vital to the operation of the fund in your mad and vengeful attack on the existence of the fund he wrote you have rightfully calculated that you are bleedings bleeding it white lewis asked for an immediate reply to his query will you or will you not remit ken law would become effective next january 1 he said he thought the law requires that in 1950 support of wheat and cotton prices be at 83 to 90 1 per cent of parity he called balled this a far cry from the misrepresentation of those who tell wheat and cotton growers that they will get only 60 per cent ader the 1948 act forecast indicates output to be close to 1948 top figure marshall plan countries nations everywhere sharing in the largesse af of anc Uncle e sam would rejoice at the hews that the 1949 IT V S crop forecast indicated a near re record cord volume so rosy was th the e picture that experts held that this years farm production would almost approximate record output REPORTING this the U S department part ment of agriculture said that it if the crop did aid not hot top all records it certainly would be second only to last years figures since the growing season for mo most s t crops was practically over ove there was little likelihood in any any change in iii the prop crop forecast corn especially was abundant with this crop almost certain to result in some sort of controls on surpluses the prediction for the corn crop was 35 billion bushels only 35 per cent below last years record but 27 per cent above average the new figure was only about 13 million bushels less than the forecast of a month ago it was believed that a corn crop of this size was virtually certain to lead the government to invoke production controls on the 1950 crop lit la a move to prevent accumulation of a burdensome surplus As a consequence corn from this years crop is expected to move into government hands under price support programs to ta join the more than million bushels remaining there from the 1948 crop NO OFFICIAL decision on corn was likely however until after the october crop estimate the agriculture departments wheat crop estimate of nearly billion bushels was virtually unchanged from a month previous drevlou this would make it the fourth largest wheat what crop crop on record also among the relatively large crops were rice tree nuts soybeans grapes cotton flaxseed sorghum grain dried beans sugar cane aud and cherries STEEL ath round unsure unless the situation changed drastically there would be no fourth round wage increase for the lations pat nations ions steelworkers steel workers almost on the eve oatlie of the strike call the CIO united steelworkers Steel workers union gave up its fight for a wage hike and called oft off the strike THE million member union accepted both president Tru Tr maps recommendation for an extension of the strike truce and recommendations of a presidential fact find ing board aimed at solving the steel wage dispute philip murray union boss told the president in a telegram that he gave up the wage increase demand with profound regret but agreed to the boards recommendations in the in interest of concluding a prompt settlement six of the nations major steel producers accepted the truce extension request but no company had given an answer on the boards formula WHATEVER happened later in the steel wage dispute was of prime importance to the nations economy the public learned during the war years and attendant strikes just how important is the steel industry to the nations progress and economy A pattern in steel wage negotiations might well serve as the pattern for all in industry i inasmuch as practically all U S industry is Is dependent in some way upon steel if steelworkers steel workers got a pay raise other raises would necessarily follow in other industries and the nation again would be faced with t the he inflationary spiral which is a continuing subject of argument as to whether it has subsided SECURITY cost rising an increase in the cost of social security to about 15 billion dollars by 1960 and possibly more than 30 billion by the year 2000 would be the net effect to american taxpayers it if congress would pass the pending proposals to expand our present system THIS ESTIMATE was made by the research council f for or economic security a chicago organization in a study entitled estimated cost of social security expansion cost estimates are based upon the estimated population and mortality rates for future years no allowances for variations in wage or price levels has been made the expanded program all of which has been given consideration in the congress consists of four parts 1 increase in old age and survivors insurance benefits and coverage 2 the introduction ci of a new concept in federal social insurance namely compensation for temporary and permanent disability 3 an expansion in federal public assistance payments 4 adoption of a national compulsory insurance system THE COST in terms of taxable payrolls the council points out ranges from 97 per cent to per cent in 1960 depending upon low cost or high cost estimate for the year 2000 the estimate ranges from per cent to per cent of taxable payrolls ROCKETS A fizzle the navy was unhappy at results of its second attempt to shoot its new viking rocket to arf an altitude of miles the effort failed when the rocket mysteriously petered out at a height of only 33 miles THIS was the second missile of its type the first american high altitude rocket to be fired the first viking in the initial test last may reached an altitude of 50 1 miles A se second cond shoot on august 26 was abortive the rocket failing to leave the launching platform while understandably disappointed in the latest test scientists and officers cleis associated with the project were undaunted and in a determined ter mined back to the drawing board abar d manner set to analyzing what had gone wrong THERE was some talk that despite failure in height desired the test may have developed the fact that rockets and rocket ships of the future will be made without fins since fins set up terrific resistance si at the astronomical speeds with which the rockets travel the rocket which fizzled for foe the navy was designed to reach an altitude of miles although the present power plant would limit it to miles MARINE CORPS bold defiance defense secretary louis johnson been heard on the subject but his immediate reaction was probably sulphuric he had directed for purposes of unity that the various arms of the national military services cease observing special days such as ar army my day navy day etc TO DATE there eherd had been reper cassion only from the navy league which while it say as much indicated it atwould would go ahead with navy day this year but the marine corps in traditional dit ional fashion lashed out directly minced no words national commandant of the marine corps league theus J macqueen MacQue cn declared cla red the marines would observe marine corps day no matter what johnson says he added that since the league is a civilian group there much he johnson can do about it SO on november 10 it if commandant macqueen has his way the U S marine corps league will
