Show A centennial story of southern utah I 1 lets guard what Is left by 11 W earl Rhin rhinehart chart district conservationist CHAPTER X mount carniel carmel glendale I 1 john D lee and company exploring the country we now call long valley stated in 1852 that there arc some handsome places for settlement in the narrow but fertile bottom of the stream they reported that these areas could be easily irrigated there was plenty of accessible rangeland for pastures timber for construct construction ic n was plentiful and col was available for fuel this area along a 20 mile milc stretch of river flat was colonized in 1864 abandoned in 1866 andre and re occupied in 1871 the population figure for 1860 shows that there were 1019 people living in mount carmel all the people that the land could support this figure has varied very little since A slight decrease between 1910 1930 cor responds corresponds to the poor quality of rangeland rang cland resulting from overuse by livestock mount carmel which was originally called winsor was named after mt alt carmel in palestine and founded in 1864 priddy meeks led the group who made temporary homes in dugouts and began preparing the lands for irrigation I 1 lands above were selected for stock ranges they had trouble with the indians and vacated the settlement in 1866 the site was re occupied by immigrants from the muddy river settlements in nevada additional families coming into the valley cultivated lands along meadow creek muddy ark yellow jacket wash and clear creek severe hardships were noted in in that grasshoppers destroyed oli wheat in 1871 floods destroyed crops in 1885 and in 1894 severe drought destroyed 50 per cent of all livestock in 1875 more than half the inhabitants of mt aft carmel moved three miles up the river river to the present site of Or derville colonists called from nevada founded glendale in 1864 this original group included several families named berry so they called the town berryville Berr the fertility of the soil was demonstrated the first year by bv good cro crops ps and inexpensive irrigation isolation of the town at this time is noted in that those settlements along the upper virgin were 80 miles away and could be reached only by difficult roundabout roads it was about the same distance to towns north but the roads were blocked in the winter because of snow rock cliffs and canyon rocks barred transportation east and west beyond which no one lived A two acre stockade was built to protect the colonists from ma indians it was built to a accommodate c c omm 25 families both the inhabitants of berryville Berr and mt aft carmel lived in this stockade durin during 0 the winter months of fearing molesting navajos cavajos Nava jos the entire group vacated the towns in 1866 to return again in 1871 when they returned they were accompanied compa nied by many others in including bishop james leithead who renamed the town glendale glendal e after his birthplace in scotland A flour mill was built in 1872 the only one in kane county clouds of grasshoppers destroyed the crops in 1873 coal mines were opened in 1891 and the first modern roads constructed in 1930 35 to be continued |
