Show az norial morial service for cannon the church was filled I 1 to capacity on monday afternoon i when relatives and friends gathered to pay honor an 3 1 tribute to cannon D who passed from this life in a prison camp in japan in january cf c f this year incidental organ selections by I 1 mrs maxine frost preceded the J opening prayer by bishop C E walton which was followed by a vocal number by the ladies chorus rus accompanied by mrs frost the first speaker was donald T adams brother in law of cannon who td add of his early life and the progress made during those years under ca conditions editions that tha were not al ns aas easy ile he spoke of cannon as evver aver of the beautiful in life of music mac art and poetry and of his success at BYU which gained for him a scholarship to 0 a course in dramatic art in new york city which however he was unable to accept after completing a three year normal course cannon cann on taught school at cedar point where he remained until the end of may in 1941 mr adams also told lold of h is i s enlistment in the armed forces on june 21 1941 and his expectation of serving as a radio communication man after completing beven months of study in the middle west instead he was sent overseas in less than a month sailing on july 15 cannon was then transferred to the ordnance department and later lati served in the medical corps during the battle of tong another transfer took him to corregidor where he was taken prisoner when that defeat took place mr adams tid of some experiences related in the few letters received from cannon and of his h i s long internment in various prison camps finally berng being sent to japan on dec 13 1944 he closed by saying that if there is any comfort in the death of cannon or any other soldier it is the thought that he be died in in rendering service to his people and to his country tom evans evams accompanied by his daughter madolyn played carrie jacob bonds end of a perfect day 21 ka 0 B perkins followed with re arks r ks about the difficulty to adequately express himself in paying tribute to one who has been thru so much he spoke of the superhuman courage our boys have displayed in this great war and emphasized pha sized the supreme sacrifice made by cannon who was of such sensitive nature that war to him was something that made it necessary to develop great courage to meet the experiences he encountered mrs ruth bailey then sang the beautiful tchaikovsky song none but the lonely heart accompanied compa nied by mrs after which mrs A J redd told of the high regard a chaplain of the army held for cannon as expressed in a letter received by the nily the letter also told of the ivice cannon rendered by reading to and otherwise entertaining wounded men who were hospitalized in prison camps she read a beautiful poem cannon wrote about a butterfly on the wing of a plane which he sent to his sister mrs dorothy adams also several shorter ones published before cannon entered the service bishop summers then told of continued Continue a on page paga tour four I 1 I 1 memorial services i continued from page 1 his first acquaintance with cannon he too emphasized the great contribution made through service ice and the manner in which he met the heartbreaking heart breaking experiences through which he passed during his imprisonment he offered word of appreciation to all who took part in the service and asked aske d gods blessing on those who are left to mourn the passing of cannon another selection by the ladies chorus beautiful isle of somewhere followed by the closing c I 1 asi ng prayer offered by arthur S wood brought the memorial rhe morial service to a close among the host of friends assembled were some from distant points and a representative group of american legionnaires from dove creek they brought with them their own banner and a beautiful american flag which was placed at the front of the th church near a flag draped table on which flowers and a photo of cannon rested A fine service honoring a young man of sterling qualities who would have continued serving his fellowmen fel had he been permitted to live cannon D was born in ephraim on july spending his early childhood in ucolo bucolo he received his education in utah and colorado and graduated from BYU at provo he is survived by his father R D two brothers rolph and byron two sisters mrs dorothy adams and mrs margaret sharp and a grandmother mrs hannah of ephraim |
