Show H lloyd hansen led active useful life editors note the following story about the life of H lloyd hansen who was taken out of life so suddenly on saturday nov 18 as told in the record of last week was prepared by miss I 1 sabelle isabelle I 1 redd H lloyd hansen was born february 12 1887 in Ameri american americal caA fork utah a son of parley P and melissa boley hansen he married katherine wood in the salt lake temple december 24 1914 mr hansen received his education in the american fork schools and later attended the utah state agricultural college at logan from which institution he received his B S degree he was always an A student and received his degree without being required to take the final examinations in ae the autumn of 1912 george A adams a san juan county school board member went to logan in search of a teacher who would meet the needs of the day here having conferred with john A widstoe W widstoe he be was directed to H lloyd hansen whom he interviewed after some discussion mr hansen agreed to come and look the situation over shortly after his arrival here he called upon mr adams and asked to be directed to the school building in order that he might look over the books and outline his work mr adams informed him that we had only a small elementary school which was housed in what is now the san juan record building and little or no equipment he also said it would be his responsibility to enlarge the school and include high school grades be it said to mr hansens credit the monticello high school had its birth in 1912 in the L D S church and has grown steadily ever since mr hansen may be termed a self educated man working his own way through college he was a man of sound practical judgment As a youth he ran a herd of cattle on public domain between lehi and the point of the mountain after coming to san juan he followed somewhat the same pursuit and was known as a successful farmer and livestock nian man as well as a great educator he has been almost constantly identified with the school system here bere iere having served as teacher principal and superintendent he served as superintendent from february 9 1923 to june 1943 during his administration as superintendent two hi high h school buildings were built in branding the addition to the monticello hi high h school was made and many smaller buildings in the outlying districts were built the present san juan high school at blanding will also stand as a monument to the name of H lloyd hansen it will be remembered that in 1937 the san juan high school burned to the ground the financial outlook for erecting another building was dark it was due to mr hansens untiring effort and perseverance in presenting the true facts to the proper authorities that we now have the fine building which was erected within a very short time after the disaster his expert mind in solving some of the financial problems will long be kemem bere d X he was an active civic and church worker since coming to san juan and served as MIA MI A president and teacher in various organizations he also served as a local missionary being released from that calling in 1937 to serve as first counselor in the bishopric of the monticello ward in which capacity caba eity city he was serving at the time of his death he was a special friend of the young people interested not only in their scholastic training but in their character buil building dino he was true to his students and friends through his loyalty to the school and because of the shortage of teachers in monticello he accepted a position as teacher of mathematics in the high school and was serving in that capacity at the time of his death mr hansen is survived by his widow and the following daughters mrs devaughn jones and mrs willard barlage monticello mrs glen E peterson of san francisco and miss kathern hansen salt lake city and three grandchildren james lloyd and helen marie barlage and david lloyd jones also a brother and two sisters mahlin S hansen and arsena H robinson of american fork and wanda H varney of salt lake city it is hope which makes the shipwrecked sailor strike out with his arms in the midst of the sea tho the no land is in sight ovid |
