Show W WHAT OF ithe FUTURE it would seem that weare now face to face with a future i of great uncertainty the past with its opportunities to correct many of the evils of the present day is behind us and it is too late to do anything to counteract the mistakes or even to profit by some of them ahem although there is optimism in the minds of some as result of certain advances madland made ma and the opening of a second front we must also take lake into account the cost in the final analysis it is grim satisfaction at best to learn of the well planned invasions and the success sue cess which attended such operations in sicilyann sicily Sicil yand and in the pacific coast area since it is only the beginning and so muchuan and will happen during the weeks ahead to change the present outlook casualties in the united states armed forces from the pearl harbor catastrophe to november 15 1942 excluding the african campaign were dead wounded and missing or prisoners according to a report of the national safety council the same report indicates that over the same period perio dof of time there were casualties amounting to dead and injured among war workers 1 when we consider that our armed forces are scattered over the whole world worl dand and that defense plants are operating at greater rate of production since november aber 15 we can be sure that the casualties are mounting at terrific speed I 1 and d that the dead and wounded w and missing missi ng are increase increasing ing in in number only now are details of previous victories being relayed i along with the information concerning some of the missing who were either taken laren prisoner or who are now counted among the dead and the end is not yet yat however the advances being made in the south Paci pacific fisc area and along the european fronts will hasten the time of settlement I 1 and bring about the temporary peace as a time of respite when adjustments may be made in some q quarters barters uart ers but it will also bring into being the grim realities of the aftermath of war that face this and other nations when drastic changes in the war program must be made and I 1 when the wounded and disabled men will likely be returned and an exchange of war prisoners will begin this is only one of the many problems of the future and along with it will come the readjustment to be made in the lives of the families who are now engaged in producing the implements of war as they will be thrown back on their own resources along with the millions of men and women in the armed forces while it is true that scattered families will be reunited and family life will be resumed after a fashion which will bring happiness to some the great majority of people will find it very difficult to remake their pattern of life to meet the new situations that will confront them A very great deal of responsibility will fall on our government and on those who are in charge of rehabilitation facilities and we must be prepared to set up a new defense along the home front to meet the emergencies that will arise ere long it is not too soon to be thinking about the future and planning for the readjustment period which will follow the declaration of peace some there are who think the war will continue until 1944 and even into 1945 but we still predict a sudden and unexpected turn of events which will change them the present outlook and bring to a close the present phase of warfare it is with this thought in mind we suggest giving thought to the future and what we can do as individuals to make the way less difficult for those who will be in need of help it will require the utmost cooperation and the combined effort of all form of organic organization a and above all that we plan for the kind of future that will bring a deg degree fe e of encouragement to the men and their families who are now doing their bit in all branches of service hard as it is to think of the bitterness and destruction now in evidence there must and will be recompense for the sacrifices of the past and the present and those yel yet t j to come if we will do all that is possible to do toward promoting the fellowship of man based on love and helpfulness putting behind us the past and looking toward the new and better age we know is just ahead faith plus works will bring it into being |
