Show FROM OUR MAIL BAG AND ELSEWHERE through correspondence and through papers we receive from many points we are able to keep informed concerning conditions throughout the country although our references at this time are more in line with what persons are thinking or saying in regard to general affairs or conditions of living we receive many letters of inquiry and many comments concerning our editorials especially when they relate to predictions or as they give warning about the coming changes it would seem however that only one person in twenty five is much concerned over the possibility of invasion along the west coast and they are going their merry way pretty much as usual to them newspaper talk about blackouts black outs alerts or other form of caution means little or nothing this fact was brought home to us more directly last week through receipt of two letters from lower Califor california and as result of an interesting article written by whitney bolton columnist for an eastern paper although living in and reporting from hollywood california one letter contains a statement to the effect that there are no signs of blackouts black outs at night and that the streets are lighted as much as they ever were there are plenty of soldiers in the streets and traveling on the trains but they show a happy energetic attitude we do not hear any calamity conversations and everyone seems busy in his own way says this friend such way of living is fine and it is well for those who must be there to try to feel happy but we cannot help wonder why precautionary measures are ordered and talked about without the practice thereof and what will happen when things predicted really occur on theather thep the other ther hand the columnist referred to is spending a vacation on the east coast and his article makes mention of the difference between the two points he too mentions the nonchalant way and manner of living along the west coast as compared with the rigid discipline and the definite precautionary measures which are enforced along the east coast shores another interesting point we are aware of is the change of heart that many persons show from time to time for example in one letter we may learn that things we say or suggest as wise to do if one can leave either coast line or any of the larger cities and come to this intermountain country while it is possible to travel long distances aria are approved and we are told of other forms of prediction that come to certain ones which advise even more definite precautionary measures than we suggest in some cases because the things expected have not as yet occurred some say there is very little need for hurry or because persons who are now employed in some position whereby they feel safe insofar as financial aid is concerned there is little desire to believe we may be so near a crisis that will disrupt the present system of living we are fully aware that much of the radio talk and newspaper comments are confusing and that propaganda is stressed to throw one off guard we can also understand that those who are unaccustomed to pioneering in this or in any other period of life cannot take kindly to some of the things they read or hear which give warning of great changes ere long they therefore argue with themselves against it we have considered withholding any further information we may receive receive or thoughts we may hold in regard to the future fu ture but for the sake of those who ask for it and andi because we know that with each passing month it will be more difficult to travel long distances with the same ease as may now be done we shall continue this form of relaying word through letter or through this weekly column which has come to mean a lot to some of our readers judging from the comments of approval received over a long period of time we wa sometimes wonder why some of the things predicted are delayed but such thoughts are answered in this wise to g give ive more people opportunity to make necessary changes without too much inconvenience if they will only 0 have faith and the courage to move before it is too late although it may be more difficult to change a pattern of living that is to ones liking now it will be far better to do so before being forced into conditions that will work hardship in other ways these are the things to think about as you read our letters or this column each week if you still feel there is plenty of time to change the course of living you may feel attached to or because there are those who say it cant happen before 1944 or 46 or 47 by the latter date so much will happen that you will wish you had not wavered in faith or in the courage to embark on a new pathway toward this vast intermountain country where there is so much room to expand and so much to do f |
