Show hole in i the nt rockers herock enjoy annual meet 0 by isabelle isabella redd on saturday september 19 the hole in the rock pioneers and descendants ants gathered at bluff for the annual get together several C cais a 1 s f filled to capacity left monticello at ten we found everything very quiet at blanding ind abing that those people had started earlier we were given a warm welcome by the bluff blaff residents after riding though the town stopping here and there to greet old friends we parked at the well on the edge of town and had our lunch in the afternoon a tour was made to many of the old landmarks dear to the hearts of every boy and girl who grew up in bluff A map of the old fort had been prepared by C E walton and mary jane wi wison son wh as children had lived there gathering as nearly as possible on the spot D B perkins and floyd nielson traced the points of interest mrs margaret adams who is one of the original pioneers told a number of stories incident to the early life in bluff mrs hattie barton came next with stories as related to her by her father and others after leaving the fort we walked in a southerly direction to the san juan river and tried to visualize the old swing tree which at one time was the recreational center for bluff we next drove to the cemetery hill wh which h overlooks the whole valley from this point many landmarks once camp grounds of the original hole in the rockers were pointed out we gathered 1 again at the well in the shadow shad w of the huge cliffs for our evening program after a prime supper floyd nielson was masteroff master maste of ce ceremonies remones even though the numbers were lar largely 9 ely impromptu prompts tu a very fine evening followed ruth bailey following in the footsteps of her welch forbears came forward with two fine chorus numbers participated in by members f her fathers family the accompanist was hernia herma lee conn who is a great grand daughter of the late benj perkins fletcher bronson and his daughter zola sang old time songs which were well received rece wed fine talks were made by mary jane wilson luc inda redd and benjamin redd space does not permit a more detailed account of the happenings last but not least was music by the marvin jon jones es family and an old time square dance d ance participated in by a number cumbe r of the original or ginal pioneers another number by the R ruth uth continued on page 12 JOLE HOLE IN I THE NT ROCKERS HEROCK 0 I 1 continued from page 1 bailey chorus and ar 1 a talk by ch chas ta redd brought to a close another annual program of festivities of the hole in the rockers before adjournment however a reorganization meeting was held floyd nielson nie son was chosen as president karl S barton first vice president pearl walton second vice president and maude redd secretary As we go to press our blanding correspondent florence galbraith Gal sent more information as follows after the program ram the majority of the people returned to their homes while the remainder remain der of the group camped in bluff for the night on sunday a group of youngsters and oldsters went to the goosenecks Goos enecks and monumental valley to wind up the celebration among them were mr and mrs ben redd red d mr and mrs clarence holyoak mrs lila winbourn all of moab mr and mrs H U butt from east of monticello mrs leo tackett of nampa idaho mrs emery goodridge and boys of bluff and mrs doug galbraith bac each h night the navajo indians put on a dance and many navajos cavajos as well as white people took part in it |
