Show the old set settler aler written from salt lake city 0 my dear san Jua ners I 1 have been much sed I 1 recently with two unusual lectures i on giving civi giving ng to people in need sharing what fortune has entrusted to us and recognizing the other fellows right to a square deal the first of thesa lectures was sounded far and and name and the picture of the lecturer appeared in bold type and striking tone in popular dailies she had contrived to have the account give a graphic portrayal of her wonderful sp sphere her and of her wonderful s self elf it told of the generous sums she had given to charity of her fame and great possessions relating among other things that the fur coat in which she appeared cost we c considered risi dered her magnia magnificent dicent tributes to humanity her great rc aces res her eagerly purchased fame andl and were much impressed and as much disgusted the other lecture was not broadcast and was not intended for pu publication bli cation it is only by the merest chance that it happens to be known and it is heard only in part part the lecturers name is not given neither his picture nor any account of him whatever appears in any paper and the few minutes in which his face appeared in the dim light k of the street lamp it looked pinched and thin his shabby jacket was poor protection from the december wind and he appeared to have been a victim of unfair treatment he was beginning he waited at the corner of main and north temple street and when he detected what he took to be lines of kindness in a certain face he asked in tones of humble entreaty for the price of the most moderate meal then with grateful thanks for the small coin he started down the street towards a cheap restaurant but halfway half way down the block he met a friend or an acquaintance at all events it was a fellow human being as hungry as he a fellow being treading the rocky path of adversity and looking for something to eat A passerby overheard them when they met no you take it insisted the man with the thin jacket and right down there by that big sign find a place where you can get a glass of milk and a sandwich the other man in distress protested but he be was over ruled and with the precious coin in his hand he hurried away tow towards ardts the big sign while the man with the thin jacket started hungrily after him nourished with that magic sense of having ministered to human needs if that man had had a coat worth his charities would have reached gladly into a wide f field I 1 was impressed deeply impressed and moved to the heart with the blessedness of giving ALBERT R LYMAN |
