Show readers column 0 we invite your personal comments and will i include your letters if they contain information of general interest to the readers of the san juan record note an interesting letter was received by mr andars and mrs ray christensen from their son leon who enlisted some time ago to serve with the co stationed at provo excerpts from this letter may be interesting to some of his friends because of the information given about life in a camp leon says dear mother I 1 have just returned from fort douglas where I 1 spent two weeks in first aid training I 1 took the standard advanced first aid instruction course now back at camp and teaching first aid to new men it is compulsory that all C men receive first aid instruction now seems to me that soon there will be no more CC camps especially ally if the age limit for military service is lowered to 18 years and because enrollees con only enroll at 17 the major told us this the other day and since then we have been required to do a little marching and formation in a more military manner I 1 hope we do not have to go 90 to war soon as it now seems every week or so some one of the men in the cs either goes to the navy or the marines did I 1 tell you I 1 took a civil service examination on march for mec mechanics hancs and about the received a rating guess what I 1 got 94 out of a possible there were questions which took up history algebra ai and rid geometry also a few f ew mechanical questions the rating is good for one year and if in that time I 1 am qualified or certified I 1 will get a job it may be anywhere in the U S A or possessions with love f for or all L leon 0 note each day brings at least one new contact either through letters which come from so many directions now or as our path may cross with some new friend who may chance to enter the record office or as we go about town searching for news to include in each issue of our weekly paper more and more forcibly do we realize how many persons are watching the fast moving events of national or world interest and the need to mark time patiently and hopefully during these uncertain times A few excerpts taken from letters received last week from new and old friends follow with footnotes where i it is is necessary to answer a question which may help others who read this column who may have similar thought in mind would anyone be excluded from active membership with you if they did not agree with your ideas about eating meat just what are your reasons for not doing so I 1 am in full accord with ayou you in abolishing liquor and tobacco because of the ill effects on those who use them persons who still require the above withdraw of themselves because we do not supply these things I 1 we do not eat meat because we are so much better off without such food and because to eat meat we would be disobeying the unar unwritten itten law we follow in regard to taking life the sarr writer says 1 I do not think that any set rules of diet can be laid down for every one since what is I 1 food for one may be poison to another to which we make reply that we agree with this statement and we try to observe it in our settlement by eating what does agree as far as possible to do in the summer time we have a wi wider er range of food and more fruit al though at other seasons we are limited in some respects 0 note the friend from the state of maine who asked for more information about the scenery and our methods of living in this western country and who would prefer to have certain articles or pages deleted in order to tell more about personal or general affairs sent another letter indicating that there are some objectionable features on what we call the aready print sections of our paper we are glad to have this comment because it enables us to explain exola in to this friend and to others who may not know that we receive eight of our pages all printed and that this news new from week to week although we have the privilege of choosing the general subjects this letter continues with a paragraph which brought a smile as we read and now for the flowers your editorials are fine and I 1 like the old settler column and the home of truth items in fact the things I 1 like about the paper far outweigh the few things I 1 object to 11 0 i note three letters from the west coast during the week and in each one reference is made to conditions of local or general uncertainties one writer says believe me when I 1 say how much I 1 enjoy the record I 1 envy you all the life up there because life is a nightmare chere here on the coast we are between two air ports and the planes are droning overhead night and day another writer says the whole world is now in such a mess that except for ones faith in god life if one thinks at all is not worth the living unless one can do something above the material plane I 1 often think of you and your courageous work in the face of so many difficulties this from a person who has been with us and who also knows what it means to overcome over come obstacles A third letter came from san francisco from a woman who would lilke to come intermountain country but who is now weighing the cost in more ways than one she says 1 I am trusting to be shown what to do I 1 feel very peaceful this morning april 19 but I 1 wonder if it is my physical comfort that gives me this peace or my trust in god it is hard bard as I 1 look out at the trees and the pretty gardens and far across san francisco bay it is very hard to realize the misery and the bloodshed the want and poverty that exist in other parts of the world so are many persons thinking and wondering but just waiting for some power to direct or to force them to leave their present locations |
