Show A VISIT TO THE INDIAN SCHOOL AT IGNACIO 0 by isabelle redd the elementary teachers of monticello and blanding were the gue guests ats of george gravelle the indian agent at blanding on a trip to the ignacio ute and navajo school in colorado ignacio is about miles from monticello monticello and about 30 miles from durango there are navajo and ute indian children at the school they have gravel from kini kin e garten to the tenth grade inclusive with one group where the children are sent until they learn the english language there are many large buildings on the campus a girls dormitory a boys dormitory a home economics building a kitchen and dining room building th the e classroom building a large hospital a teachers club house a number of employees homes b besides le ides a community house a council house and post office and trading post for the indians there is a small but beautiful memorial park set aside in honor of dead indian chiefs two of whom are chief ouray and chief ignacio the children at the school are clean well dressed healthy and very well behaved the school is owned and run by the government and all teachers are employed through the civil service department |
