Show monticello explorers climb Church rock fd cd place their troop flag at the top the monticello explorers under the leadership of melvin frost successfully concu conquered red formidable Church rock Satur saturday dayl march 1941 the fellows left early in the morning for an outing in dry valley they took with them ropes axes chisels and various other implements to help them in their hazardous ascent the climb was started at the coith end cf f the rock and after chiseling chi footholds in the soft sandstone they reach ced the top of the second ridge the perplexing plex ing problem of how to climb the perpendicular sides of the ton tiffy now faced the troop soma je e fellows started to dig foo akus up tro face of the cliff while the lers went looking for a break in the sides to climb up bill redd finally succeeded in lodging a rope high up in a small crevice and wendel black made the dangerous climb up to the small ledge edge where the crevice was located after climbing up the steep rocks wendel made the rope fast to a large rock at the top and the rest of th the fellows shimmied up the fellows erected a monument at the top and planted the troop flag where it can be plainly seen from the highway according to melvin as far as he knows this is the first f arst time anyone has climbed completely to the top of the gigantic rock the fellows who completed the trip include melvin frost james hess lorin moffit bill redd wendel black hue barton grant bronson ted bronson wyman redd and boyd bronson |
