Show navajo tribal fair colorful event we are grateful to clarence A frost for the interesting story he offers about a trip to arizona last week mr frost also brought back a program of the navajo tribal fair and one of the pageant which we wish you might see and read since both are complete in regard to information about events and past history of this interesting people mr and mrs C A frost returned early monday morning from mesa arizona where they went to kike mr and mrs S D smith the smiths are spending some time in the mesa temple they reached that place in time for the meetings of welcome for the new president and his wife and the farewell of the retiring president and wife while home the frosts visited in globe cholow snowflake joseph city and adamana adamand all in ari ona with friends fram gallup N M they went to window rock ariz where the navajo tribal fair was in fuu full progress A very outstanding pageant was presented the nights of september 2021 20 21 portraying the main events in the navajo history from about 1625 to after the treaty with the tribal leaders and government officers in 1868 each act was given by a different school all actors being navajo school children there must have been a thousand students taking part in the pageant the agricultural exhibits were very good a marked step forward is shown by the quality of the products the blanket weaving art is being developed to a much finer point by the younger weavers some of the prize winners being school girls f from rom 14 to 16 years of age there were some very fine paintings from the different schools A band was present which would be a credit to any people all navajo boys led by a navajo band master the band furnished music during changes in the pageant and while rodeo was going on each afternoon the rodeo was good limited to navajo men horses and cattle their events are different from those of whites in that no cheering is heard if one horse wins its supporters do not show their joy by any outward demonstrations the arena was in a natural flat valley with hills on the east and west A large stadium was built up the side hill to the west with seats feet long having a capacity of or more but these seats did not nearly hold bold the crowds many people being scattered over the hillsides hill sides the numerous campfires camp fires in the evening gave one the impression of a city with its many lights sunday night was finished out with the navajo ceremonial dances the interest and growth are a result of cooperation between the united states government and the navajo people both seem to be doing a fine job |
