Show homemakers PAGE marie mane M ogden the following article was taken from an eastern paper and was written by a friend at graduation time the past year we think it may interest some of our young friends now who are about to graduate and especially the beehive girls who are always on the alert to improve themselves we thought of condensing the article but decided there was no part of it which could be left out id rather be a well rounded personality a girl told the sing ing master who said she ought to develop her great talent not quite understanding the depth of her meaning then her words echo and re echo through my consciousness almost daily now theres no bigger message for graduates and all others than the necessity of afi striving to be a well rounded per sodality sona lity it strange that princes and kings and clowns that caper in sawdust rings and common folks like you and me are builders of eternity to each is given a ba bag 1 of tools a shapeless mass and a book of rules and each must make i ere life has flown a stumbling block or a steppingstone stepping stone yes to each is given something some ability gift or talent as the bible call sit which should be developed and used for the good of self and others else it is lost dissipated or becomes self destructive the primary and ultimate purpose of education whether acquired in binl elementary or high school college or university or just through the haphazard hard knocks of the school of life to learn to lecog nize develop and use specific abilities gifts and talents for the good of oneself and others for the good of oneself and others how selfish that sounds but life has a curious selfish twist that we must learn to interpret properly else we get curiously twisted if we cannot be of some good to ourselves we cannot be of much good to others if we are good to others we are bound to reap the benefits ourselves that is the great lesson so many fail to learn despite the fact that thac it is supposed to be one of the first taught do unto others as you would have them do unto you be unto others what you would have them be unto you do what you would have others do be what what you would have I 1 others be I 1 i where so many fail in an effort to be and do they forget the feelings and rights of others they crush hurt and disable others ruthlessly grasping everything in a selfish desire to gain wealth or power or lazily I 1 I 1 taking everything a and n d giving I 1 nothing in return I 1 it cant be done if one wishes I 1 the complete ultimate success that means health peace happiness and other such permanent rewards the other kind of success is only a mirage if one gains the whole world and loses his soul loses health the knack of making and keeping friends the zest and enjoyment of simple j sweet wholesome everyday things common to kings and peasants I 1 alike caithin fai thin self ones fellow beings and god almighty then all the millions and all the power in this world will not compensate and when those millions and that power is lost nothing will be left for the poorest beggar in the streets or in the almshouse wilh memories of worthwhile achievements loving services given and exchanged happy moments with friends and dear ones will be a thousand times richer and more successful so dear graduates and all others who so sojourn J ourn upon this earthly sphere try to be a well rounded personality first and a great genius a great power and a great success afterwards if your job is running an elevator or a bus selling soap or selling ads dressmaking or cooking painting or composing masterpieces giving advice from a schoolroom a pulpit a bank a doctors office by radio newspaper or book do your best you can elevate the humblest task or degrade the grandest by your attitude and your methods be honest sincere wholesome kind courteous and generous give of yourself your ability talent dont be afraid to give by giving you live by giving you get somehow the desire to give and the act of giving start vibrations that tune you in with opportunities thereby opening up the channels of supply that enable you to be become and get but dont give like a drunken fool or a madman give wisely sanely kindly as you wish to get it is a selfish world use yourself for a standard be what you wish others to be do as you wish others to do treat the world as you wish to be treated with such a measuring rod to guide you though you may seem all off at times some way somehow sometime your knowledge and experience will find a balance and you will eventually become that most desirable of creatures a well rounded personality with a resulting success beyond your fondest a aspirations SALLY HARBAUGH although school days are about over the following lunch box
