Show FA V WR NOTE OT E ia IVA 1 11 wy melancholy baby babe 0 1 f c 11 miia 1 ap M i ia 3 iiii H j come to ir U ty er 49 turn lo 10 0 o page nine seven years ago he was struggling along with a shelter that a self respecting indian would have turned 2 his iback back upon a team and a milk cow or two when he was visited by his parents it was not an inviting prospect but the mother instinct in her nature went out to her boy in his struggles and mrs smith saw possibilities ahead and used her persuasion to convert the father to join up with the son and work out their destiny together so in the spring of 1931 they moved out to dodge point and commenced to work they made good use of the portable sawmill with which some board feet of saw timber on and adjacent to the homestead was converted into useful used in the construction of their home sheds corrals and a rabbit and rodent tight fence around five or more acres of garden and orchard land by dint of hard work and persistence they now have as a large orchard of young trees growing with some of the oldest now in bearing they raise early garden stuff asparagus onions radishes lettuce rhubarb straw and raspberries rasp berries peas beans corn potatoes yes and fine watermelons water melons plus tomatoes and other luxuries their entire place has a thrifty and homelike atmosphere and with the adjacent scenic beauties an abundance of native shade trees and a limitless supply of fire wood they have just about everything the heart could desire except possibly a more convenient water supply water for domestic purposes has to be carried a distance of yards up a steep path from the bottom of a ravine or a small canyon it is good pure and cold water but it requires considerable manual effort to obtain it the only other alternative is to haul their water from the frost homestead about a mile distant where there is an artesian well and windmill that affords a fairly abundant supply but there is is no water for irrigating even gardens on dodge point but the se settlers there are enjoying all the delicacies that are usually dependent upon irrigation now dear reader remember that mr smith was 64 years of age when he moved onto dodge point and that mrs smith the mother of nine children was only a very few years younger they are an admirable young couple whom it is a pleasure to know they are devoted members of the L D S church and find time apart from their strenuous manual duties on the f farm arm to not only attend to their local church duties mr mrs s smith is a devoted and energetic member of the monticello relief society but to spend the entire winter last year in temple work at mesa arizona not only this but they find much in the world about them to lend zest to their existence and are never bo bored ed with their surroundings they are on terms of friendly intimacy with the birds and flowers that surround them we were shown the nest of a little wren that is nesting with them this thi s year for the third summer the four tiny eggs are as safe with them under the roof of a shed as if they had been hidden in the top of one of the tall pines adjacent they know the names and characteristics of practically all the members of the plant family about them and mrs smith has an original talent for poetry that is rare and exceptional so life with the smiths is not monotonous or prosaic but tell us dear reader dont you think that these good people have about performed their share of the worlds work dont you think that they have earned a rest and an opportunity toi to fric Turge some of their cherished ambitions such as sister smiths talent tv to write poetry to travel some if they wish to do which they expressed a desire while we were visiting with them in a rich country like this should there not be some ample provision for such deserving old people which would afford them freedom from financial worry insecurity and the alternative ter native of mortgaging and dissipating si a homestead that their children have helped to create and are entitled to enjoy after their parents have passed on we do not believe with some of the leaders that old people should be kept in the harness until they drop and fall into the waiting graves we believe that there should be a respite a time for the recapitulation of ones life work and time for the rounding out of any long cherished ambitions with the financial ability to attaint them before passing beyond the veil dont you |
