THE DAMAGE RACKET in the early days of san juan county the indians evolved an easy way to make a living they would start a farm fence in as tightly as was necessary to insure the cattlemen catt lemens s stock breaking thru then they would ask an amount of damages today some farmers take advantage of the fact that their fences are very poor or leave gates down and demand damages from the depredations of range stock although they may not intentionally leave their fences in bad repair they often do ask unreasonable damaged for loss of crops when they are responsible themselves
