Show RECOGNIZE HEROES OF PEACE dy by hl ISSERMAN st louis loud J HY should we only dedicate days of memorial to the honor of W those who served their country on the battlefield why have we nye not days of memorial for those who lost their lives serving their country less dramatically but yet as effectively and in the same sacrificial spirit Is a country only served on the battlefield are there not other services equally important import ant and demanding as much heroism as much devotion and as much consecration why could not memorial if day be expanded so that the heroes of peace shall be placed on a par with the heroes of the war so that the coal miner who loses his life to io make our homes warm our children healthy and to furnish power to our mills and factories shall receive the recognition due sacrifice are not the moti mothers lers who lose their lives bearing new life into the world deserving of just as asmuth much national approbation as those boys who tell fell on the battlefield do not these mothers reveal the same heroism what of the scientists who in their laboratories inoculate themselves IV with th deadly germs and quietly and unobtrusively fall victims to their courage and their desire desire to serve their countrymen shall they be ignored while only the man who bears arms is recognized our memorial Ale morial day is a good institution but its present narrow scope should be widened to include all those who have served their country well by doing this we shall encourage good citizenship in times of peace as well as dramatic martyrdom in time of war |
