Show I stimulates the pituitary-adrenal-cortical system causing the body to increase secretion of hormones and it also brings about increased utilization of hormones by body tissues. tis-sues. This knowledge provides medical men with a new key for devising better ways to control the ravages of rheumatic fever. So far either salicylates or hormones hor-mones have served as the chief weapons in taming this disease. Use of hormones has been a pop ular treatment because scientists felt it curbed inflammation caused by the fever. They didn't realize until recently that hormones helped help-ed because the body's endocrine mechanism is "off kilter" during course of the ailment. University pediatricians, in a preliminary study for Dr. Kelley's present work, were also the first to prove that rheumatic fever patients pa-tients do have a low level of adrenal adren-al hormones in their blood. Giving hormon'es (in the form of ACTH) on a carefully individualized basis for each patient, they got outstanding out-standing beneficial results. Doctors speculated perhaps a combination of hormone-salicylate therapy whereby the body is stimulated to put out hormones and additional hormones are supplied sup-plied from without may be the best possible treatment. Further studies may probe this idea. The "dual action" of salicylates presents at least one mystery. Since hormone secretion is stim ulated, Dr. Kellcy and his associates asso-ciates expected to find an increase of hormones in the patient's blood They didn't. "Therefore," Dr. Keley said, "antirheumatic "an-tirheumatic effects of salicylates are not dependent on higher circulating circu-lating levels of adrenal hormones." He wonders if the antirheumatic effect may. not be due to the enhanced en-hanced tissue utilization of these adrenal hormones rather than to the mere presence of more hormones hor-mones in the blood. SORORITY SWIM PARTY ENJOYED Mrs. L. J. Peterson, 4961 Cottonwood Cotton-wood Lane; was hostess to fellow members of Xi Gamma chapter, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, at a swimming party and dinner Thursday Thurs-day evening. An Italian menu was served- in the garden where hurricane lamps and colored lanterns burned to add atmosphere to the affair. Assisting Mrs. Peterson were Miss Leona Howard, Miss Gretta Sharp, Mrs. O. R. Webb, Mrs. R. G. Wilks, Mrs. G. D. Crowther and Mrs. Lloyd Olsen. |
