Show Hie JNced for Driver Education In the Schools By E. Allen Raleman Superintendent Superin-tendent of Public Instruction. , The press, the radio, and vit-j al statistics clearly show the need for an organized effort to eliminate traffic accidents. In this atomic age, the trial -and-error method used in learning learn-ing how to drive has proven to be costly. Statistics showing the ever-increasing number of accidents acci-dents resulting in the loss of lives and property, not to mention men-tion the sorrow and broken homes, prove that something must be done. We must conclude con-clude that education, engineering, engineer-ing, and enforcement must work cooperatively to secure the desired de-sired result that of making our motor vehicle a safe machine mach-ine of transportation instead of an instrument of death". The right to drive should be preceded by training in driver education. This -education to be effective must include more than mechanical facts and skill of driving. We must instill in our youth proper attitudes, a sense of social responsibility, and a respect for the right of others. When these conditions have been attained we will see positive results. It is with this in mind that we in the State Department of Education are interested in inaugurating in-augurating driver education in every school of the state. There are at the present time a number num-ber of schools in the state operating oper-ating driver education classes. A great number of students are learning to drive under proper supervision and are using scien tifically tested methods and facts. . It is our opinion that safety on the highway, to a large ex- tent, is dependent upon proper functioning of driver education classes in our schools. |
