Show Highlights ot Celebration , Boys Did a Job and Had a Time, Too Lots of things went on in Sugar Su-gar House the night of the big V-J Day celebration sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Some of them we won't mention but here's a couple of items you might glance at: First of all we want to award the crocheted cross of honor to some mighty fancy bugling done by one of the American Legion boys. IP Carl Brown will step into the Bulletin office, we'll bestow him with his award. We don't know how many people peo-ple appreciated Carl's playing but lit was mighty fancy. ? . ' i i : went something like this: "Hiro-hito's "Hiro-hito's got an "atomic ache." And there were others. The kids got a great kick out of pasting the dummies with dirt and peanut shells, in fact they almost tore them to bits. Did you notice the gleam ii" John Barnes' eye as he handec out peanuts and guided the whole celebration along? W don't know whether it was i gleam of satisfaction because st many thousands of people wen in Sugar House having a gooc time or whether John had some thing else on nis minci. However he did a swell job and certainly gave Sugar House some nice plugs over a special broadcast on KDYL from the plaza. Paul Pehrson and Holger also got in on the broadcast. Jim Allen closed his new liquor store up tight as a drum as soon as the flash came, and many a thirsty celebrator pounded fruitlesslv on the door. A couple cou-ple of obstreperous customers got some bricks and anounced they were going in anyway, but Jim stood firm and Officer Wil-lard Wil-lard DeRose came along about then so nothing happened. We were standing in the Bulletin Bul-letin office chatting with Mel Wells of the Veterans Administration Admin-istration and his brothpr Ed. visiting vis-iting from California, when the flash came. It wasn't ten seconds till horns started blasting and the police and fire sirens hit the air. Jallopies with exhausts roaring roar-ing and dragging tin cans roared up and clown, and as if to join in the celebration, old Thor started start-ed hurling thunderbolts and lightning chains around the heavens. The lid was really off. Three army officers came down 21st So. honkinc ueir car I horn, but when they let it up 1 at the intersection it kept on honking and they had to dash All we want 10 kiiuw, l, is when the rest of the boys were plaving "To The Colors" why did narts of the William Tell overture over-ture keep coming out of your bugle? And Burt the Barber . . . there's another episode. Sometime Some-time during the course of the evenine Burt disappeared. Russ Shurtliff organized a posse and went on a regular manhunt for him. The funny part is Brother Burt was in good hands all the time. He was plaving host to Warden John E. Harris of the state nrison. And he wasn't lost because if he was, we were lost with him. Holger Larson was a busy little bee during the evening. He had the job of giving 5000 kisses away candy kisses, by the way. There was also a car load ot peanuts and balloons, plus confetti con-fetti and noise-makers which were all under Holger's ample wing. We think Holger lost a couple of pounds chugging over from Pehrson's store to the platform but that won't hurt the Bishop's "bishop." It was a job well done, Holger. And did you know we had a huddiner radio announcer among through the downpour to Paul s service for a pair of nliers to cut the wires. A nice touch was Charlie Larson Lar-son and boys plus a few volunteers volun-teers toting a piano from the Sugar House Music Store over to the plaza and tossing it up on the stand . . it was a little tougher taking it hack at the end of the festivities, and we still have one of the casters here in The Bulletin office. our midst? Yes. Paul Pehrson held down the mike in the sound truck for a couple of hours as they toured around town telling everyone about our Sugar House celebration. Horace Sorsensen really fixed Hitler, Hirohito and Mussolini up in fine style! Those coffins were just the ticket for those three '$).';$)( guys. Don't know if you read all the slogans on the coffins but the one we liked |
