Show PROBLEMS OF ALCOHOLISM CITED AT PUBLIC MEETING More than a thousand people attended a public meeting on Alcoholism Wednesday, Feb. 28, 8 p.m., at the Southeast LDS Tabernacle, 2005 South 9th East. The meeting was sponsored by Alcoholics Anonymous of Sugar House, and was suported by the Salt Lake A. A. group, as well as the Utah State Board ot" Alcoholism X. P.Iaine Winters of the state board, and Thorpe B. Isaacson of the LDS Presiding Bishopric, and several members of A. A. were the speakers on the program. pro-gram. An academy award winning win-ning movie on Alcoholism completed com-pleted the program. DOWNWARD PATH A. A. speakers told the story of their lives: how they started on the downward road to alcoholism, alco-holism, their heartaches and difficulties, and finally how they were brought back to normal nor-mal living through Alcoholics Anonymous. One man told of his intention to take his own life, but an A. A. pamphlet stuck to his hand as he prepared pre-pared to leave his home. He read it, and determined that he would try A. A. as a last resort. He is now cured, and grateful to the program which he claims is surely "inspired." "WHO'S BUSINESS" Bishop Isaacson told the story of a dear friend who started out as a social drinker and has now ended up on "skid row," but who is currently receiving help towards curing his sickness. sick-ness. Mr. Winters talked on the subject. "Who's Business Is It?" He gave illustrations to show that alcoholism is. everybody's business, and that every citizen should get a better understanding understand-ing of the problem. |
