It is the eighth of the American Lake Series, edited by Milo M. Quaife of the Detroit Public Library. Li-brary. Dale, you remember, is a Salt Lake boy. He wrote "The Humboldt River" and other shorter monographs about Utah, and edited the State Guide of the Utah Writers' project. If you have been unfamiliar with Great Salt Lake or have feared it, your appreciation for it will greatly increase and your fear will leave with an understanding of the Lake after reading this new book. If you gain nothing from the information in the book, you will enjoy the beauty of his style of writing. Have you ever sat on the beach and "noticed behind be-hind you the shoulder of the smoky Oquirrhs, burnt umber and ocher-our ocher-our gray; in front of you, far out, deepening green water intercepted by a band of deep, dark blue in front of which is set the low-lying gold and amethyst bulk of Antelope Ante-lope Island. If you have never things about the Lake, you have noticed these and many other really never enjoyed it." After these and many other thrilling descriptions, Dale gives a history of successive civilizations civiliza-tions that have existed around the Lake, following largely the pattern pat-tern of the -Rivers of America series.
