Show Reflect This Week On Fire's Vast Toll The pr esident of the United States has . proclaimed pro-claimed the week of Oct. 7 as "Fire Prevention Week," wherein he requests every citizen to assume a personal responsibility for detecting and eliminating fire hazards under his control and take all possible precaution to safeguard both lives and property from the ravages of fire. The national board of fire underwriters advise that in 1944 the nation suffered a loss of $437,000,000 by fire with an 'accompanying loss of approximately 7,000 lives. Losses in Utah alone last year were approximately $1,200,000 with an accompanying accom-panying loss of 26 lives. Now that the winter season sea-son is approaching and the use of heating apparatus is coming into use, extreme cares, should be exercised to prevent the hazards of fire. In the last four years, the estimated fire losses in the state of Utah amounted to $3,175,000. Since 1940 to and including 1943, there has been a gradual increase in fire losses with approximately approxi-mately an increase of 144 in the year of 1943 over that of 1940. |
