Show Civil War Draft Agent Lost Life in Notifying Draftees A tombstone in a cemetery near Washington, Ind., bears this curious curi-ous inscription: "In memory of Eli McCarty . . . killed while notifying no-tifying drafted men." Wounded in one of the early battles bat-tles of the Civil war, Captain McCarty Mc-Carty left the Union army in March, 1862, and became a government gov-ernment agent enrolling men for the draft. Aroused by the news of the draft a group of southern sympathizers sym-pathizers vowed to shoot a government govern-ment agent on sight. McCarty was their unfortunate victim. |
