Show All Out War Psychology Of Nation Being Studied Psychological warfare and propaganda techniques on the radio, in motion pictures and in the press, is being studied in Columbia university's extension division, in response to the wide interest in wartime psychology. Professor Otto Klineberg, former member of the Federal Communica- tions commission, is directing the work. Social factors in abnormality are being discussed from the point of view of nervous breakdowns among selectees, shellshock, the weeding out of the unfit, and the effect of the war effort upon the civilian population. popu-lation. Material from England is studied for the light it throws on juvenile delinquency and civilian reaction re-action to constant air-raids. The , German acceptance of Naziisra and the Japanese worship of Shinto is examined thoroughly. The methodology of making public pub-lic opinion polls and interviewing cross-sections of the population will also be studied, and attitudes toward race also is a subject of discussion. Intelligence testing is being evaluated evalu-ated in relation to army experience in interviewing and placing enlisted men, and in dealing with soldiers who have not been able to adapt themselves. Business and vocational vocation-al psychology will train personnel workers to handle the enormous turnover in labor under war conditions. condi-tions. Childhood mental hygiene is being studied with a view to caring for children in day nurseries and in after-school recreational activities while mothers are engaged in war work. Personal efficiency, or applied psychology, will attempt to acquaint students, particularly war brides, with the methods of handling their personal problems caused by the war. "In all these essential fields of human understanding," Prof. Harry Har-ry Morgan Ayres, director of university uni-versity extension, declared, "the war has intensified interest and stimulated stim-ulated research. We expect to find an increasing importance attached to psychology as a result of war experience." |
