Show EDITORIAL Gov. Lee Protests Federal Money GOVERNOR J. BRACKEN LEE has had some criticism in the editorial columns of this newspaper for his opposition to the new-defunct Department of Publicity and the up-and-coming state park at the prison site. We labeled his opposition opposi-tion as false economy, and still consider it so. However, the governor is to be highly praised for his speech this week before the municipal convention at St. George (where he decried federal handouts to state and municipalities. mu-nicipalities. Governor Lee effectively pointed out that part of every dollar taken in tax money is used up by inefficiency, and only a fraction of the money comes back to the comimunities in the form of aid. Municipalities would be much better off, the - governor said, if they did the collecting and administered the funds for those projects they needed most. Mr. Lee has long advocated advo-cated this kind of strong community government, with less meddling of the federal government, and we commend him for his attitude. Citisens everywhere are becoming alarmed over the ever-increasing ever-increasing dependence of many of their fellow Americans on government handouts. The same type of "girmme" attitude '' has also been adopted by states and communities. To hear that the federal government is going to give some money out for an airport, or some roads, or something else, sounds wonderful won-derful at first. But when one considers that all of it came from, the (taxpayers' pockets, and that a lot of it was wasted, it dosen't appear quite so bright. i- . - |
