Reads Hand-Writi- ng A small device that readsliand-writte- n words has been built at Bell Telephone Laboratories. It has a ' ten-wo- rd vocabulary "Zero" through "nine" spelled out. The handwriting reader, about the size of a briefcase, was in-vented to demonstrate methods which might eventually be applied in machines designed to read a wider variety of material. "Reading machines" could be valuable in any business or in-dustry where information must now be translated into machine language by punched cards, by tape, and by pressing adding machine f or typewriter keys. In the Tele-phone business, reading machines would help in translating toll tickets, in processing bill stubs or handling orders for change in service. The device is believed to be the first which actually reads in-dividually hand written script variations in individual style. In the Telephone business machines are already in use that can read individual printed letters and numbers of a specific style and size according to Mr. H. K. Richmond, District Manager of the Mountain States Telephone Company. The handwriting reader has one minor constraint. The user must write on a special surface with a stylus, which is electrically wired. Quality is the standard . . . performance is the proof S86 the all nev; television quality . . .
